  1. Re:last summer? on Disaster Recovery For Haiti's Cell Phone Networks · · Score: 1

The movie was released last summer. IMDB is notoriously bad with release-dates, because they consider ANY public screening of ANY footage as a "release". We screened an in-progress version of the film at a festival in 2007, and thus IMDB has decided that the film was released in 2007. Nothing we said to IMDB could change that. For this reason (and many others) IMDB is not an authoritative source for information on movies.

Clearly that should read "Warcraft 2" and not "World of Warcraft 2". Although the time machine would have been much appreciated back in 1996.

  4. I spent more time online in 1996 than now. on Jurassic Web · · Score: 2, Interesting

Let's see if I can remember this correctly. In 1996 I was a Junior and then Senior in high-school. These were some of my activities...

    1) Heavy IRC usage.
    2) Designing webpages for my high-school.
    3) Writing versions of Minesweeper and Life as Java applets.
    4) Commenting on Robert Jordan novels in AOL message boards and usenet.
    5) Doing not-quite-legal activities that would have involved AOL not being happy with me if they found out. (think statute of limitations have passed)
    6) Playing Federation on AOL.
    7) Playing Bolo on school network, and wishing my home connection was fast enough to play at home.
    8) Downloading music and games from FirstClass or HotLine BBS systems (before I gained a piracy-conscience).
    9) I think I played a lot of World of Warcraft 2 online in the summer of 1996 while using Harvard's fast connection.
    10) Trying to figure out what the point of Gopher was, and eventually giving up.

The main thing I remember is that while the Web and email were important, they were both a much smaller portion of my online usage than they are today. I think the turning point was 1997, where the web took over in terms of content.

One amusing anecdote from 1996. I remember overhearing two people who couldn't figure out how to email each other. They decided it was because one of them used Netscape and the other used Internet Explorer, and decided just to use the phone from then on instead.

  5. The Game As The Strategy Class on Correlations Between Video Games And Academic Achievement? · · Score: 1

Some info. I'm a senior business administration student at Carnegie Mellon University. Our final huge strategy class is called "Management Game". Essentially this class consists of a simulated market in which student run companies compete. In other words, it's a game. In order to do well in the class you have to do well at the game.

Of course, it's a hell of a lot more complicated than Starcraft. And requires a lot more work, teamwork, analysis, and intelligence.

I've only been in the class for two weeks, and already it has forced me to use knowledge and skills from almost every other class I've taken in the business school.

It's claymation. They're gonna go about doing it the way that they always went about doing it: basically clay and taking a picture of it. Actually, Nick Park will probably come up with some claymation innovations, but I doubt that is what you're talking about.

  7. on foolish comments on Spielberg to Direct Wallace and Gromit? · · Score: 5

Dreamworks is a studio. They're going to market and distribute movies made by Nick Park. They were already gonna market and distribute Chicken Run, the next Aardman project. To think that Spielberg is gonna direct the movie, or that it'll be overcommercialized is very foolish on two levels. First of all, Wallace and Gromit, the typical Nick Park claymation, IS heavily commercialized (in England). There are tons of posters, t-shirts, and so on. Secondly, if American Beauty can grow out of Dreamworks then don't assume it's all gonna be crap. Spielberg is obviously not gonna direct this stuff, or why the hell would they be working with Nick Park, probably the single createst director in claymation. Nick has won more Oscars than Steven! Oh well. I guess I should be used to slashdot posters thinking they know everything about topics that they don't follow or know little about.

    2) I don't think Al uses Linux, but we do (but who cares?)

    3) I don't think Al reads Slashdot, but we do. (but who cares?)

    4) The site is obviously a parody of intel.com

    5) Sorry about the slow server, we'll try to fix.

    6) If you like it, _please_ buy the CD or at least vote for the video at Total Request Live.

I can try to answer any questions or whatever.

  13. Some Perspective on Blender now available for BeOS if and only if... · · Score: 1

What most of you seem to be forgetting is that this stuff _is_ available right now if you are an official BeOS developer. Now I'm not certain what the process is right now, but I know that when I first signed up to be a BeOS developer all I had to do was fill out an online form and then I was in. In other words, the people who want/need stuff like early access to new software should sign up to be a BeOS developer. Otherwise wait until the product is released. Be isn't out to screw anyone, they just understand that for most operating systems there's a difference between developers and users (a difference that Linux rips down every day). It doesn't serve the users for Be to release updates for their OS day-to-day, however it does help the developers. And this is why Be lets the registered developers have access to this stuff! If you guys _really_ want this then sign up to be a Be developer. If you don't need it right now, then wait for the release. If you just want to complain, then keep doing it. Just at least realize that there are logical reasons for this stuff.

  14. What he is _really_ complaining about. on Wired on RMS · · Score: 1

OK, maybe I'm just misinterpretting things, but it seems that RMS is complaining about the loss of a right that he gave away a long time ago. By putting all the GNU stuff under GPL he gave away rights such as determining the name of later products that uses his code. He can't decide not to let Linux use GNU stuff, because he gave up those rights (if he ever had them to begin with).

While he can whine as much as he wants to, he should look at this as a lesson. Control of naming is something he gives away in his pursuit for freedom.
