they gotta blame something right? Why not the internet and computer games? But really, how many kids are on the internet? How many kids play violent computer games? Doom and Duke Nukem and Quakwe and the rest of the classics have been around for years. But how often do we see internet kiddies and computer games making these kids slaughter each other? I know it does happen but it is kind of rare. But the world has to blame something because we all know kids can't think for themselves and make their own decisions.

  5. Dual performance on Ask Slashdot: Is SMP worth it? · · Score: 1

I've been using SMP configs for awhile now and it's good enough that'll I'll never buy another intel/amd based machine unless it is SMP. I used dual 166Mhz Pentiums for awhile and it was nice. Just because applications aren't multi-threaded doesnt mean you dont gain an advantage. The kernel is going to balance processes that the CPU services, so even if you are running an app that is not multithreaded, if you have several other processes running in the background, the kernel will balance the load on the processors.
Anyway, back to my 166s...I used them for a good while and really liked them but then I upgraded to PIIs. I first bought a dual motherboard and 1 300Mhz PII CPU. The machine was undoubtedly faster than the dual 166 Pentium configuration, but I actually noticed the single PII was not as responsive. I havent been able to explain it to anyone, but it seemed to be less responsive and laggier, though it GIMP and Quake, etc ran faster. So amonth later I had the $$$ for the 2nd CPU, so I bought a 2nd and put it in and things were great again. The lagginess I was experiencing went away and I was happily running 2 CPUs again.

  6. They already are supporting it on 3dfx To Support Linux · · Score: 1

3Dfx has been "supporting" Linux for quite a long time. They've only allowed a single individual access to the Glide source code, and he's been working alone for the past two years or so. What I'd really like to see is in-house developement of drivers or at least better support for Daryll who's been busting his ass trying to get the Banshee drivers out. The Banshees have been out for a long time, but Daryll is just now getting the Alpha Xservers out...all because his personal time is limited to developement of the drivers.

Just because an unamed source inside Compaq says Oracle is porting, doesnt mean you automatically have "the committment of a major database database vendor to AlphaLinux." IMO, it should be considered to be a rumor until Oracle themself announces it.

But if the rumor is true...this will be great!

  9. Just to be fair on BellAtlantic ADSL absurdity · · Score: 1

Just to be fair I should recount my good fortune with Bellatlantic and Infospeed DSL. I live in Pittshurgh and we must just have good local reps or something. I myself filled out their webpage back when it said it was currently being rolled out. One day, unexpectedly, long after I had forgot all about it, I recieved mail from Candice saying that it was available and I could call her and order it. I called, she told me the pricing, I told her what I wanted. I said I used an intel based machine, I ran Linux, I had an ethernet card and asked her what free ones they gave out, she told me 3COM brand ISA or PCI my choice, so I said I'd take a 7.1 connection and ethernet card. She took the order then transferred me over to the ISP. They set me up an account, gave me my IP address, and told me the tech guy would be out in exactly one week to install the hardware. The modem came in the mail, the tech guy showed up bright and early, attached the filter to my phoneline, hooked up the modem, and gave me my ethernet card. I decided to hold off on putting in the 3COM, so I did an ifconfig to get him my current MAC address, he called it in, we connected it, he gave me my books, we sat and drank some mt dew and BSed about ADSL for a little bit and then he took off. I've been enjoying DSL ever since along with 4 other Linux users in my area that I know.
