  1. Short and Skimpy on First 7-qubit Quantum Computer Developed · · Score: 1
With a quantum computer everything is MASSIVELY paralel. Take for instance decrypting a passwd file. Currently you input a string see what the salt is then compare it, then input another string, etc. Quantum computers are so parrellel that you solve for every salt at once. Obviously you can already see the implications, basically all encrytion becomes worthless. However you no longer have to do searches, you just solve for everything at one time. Note: See MASSIVELY above. A qubit, isn't a normal bit, if you read the article you can see they talk about the nucleous can hold mutiple states at once. Another question is just how many states can it hold, this plays a dirrect relation to how MASSIVE the computer can get, and only time will tell.

Another very important point to remember is that we are talking about the atomic level here, .18 micron is like trying to make a CPU with house wire. It'll be a while before anything useful comes out of it.

Most work in CS will also be in setting up problems, all the time of a program will be organizing data to be processed, since the processing will be close to instant, at least in theory.

Someone else asked about Solution States, well as I said above, you run a solver on here and you get every solution at once. Pretty fun stuff.

    Hope this helps.

  2. "Trying" a Program out and MP3s on The Dark Side Of Napster · · Score: 1

Do you remember when all warez sites use to have disclaimers like: "All programs here are for you to try out, you must delete them in 24 hours, and go buy the full version if you like them." As we all know that never worked, except for in extreme cases. However for all types of music except for the main stream I believe this works currently.

Most CDs I buy now are because I heard one or two of their songs from Napster and got a few more, then liked it so much that I bought the CD. If it wasn't for Napster bands like Portishead, Faithless, Shonen Knife, would never get my money, not because their music is bad, but because I would have never heard of them. In my opinion the bands that are getting hurt are the Backstreet Boys, Puffy, Madonna, etc. In addition it's the bands that are one hit wonders, people listen to their other works and don't buy the CD. So who is getting hurt? It's the really big guys, who have lots of money, and the artists just in it for the money, who can continue to produce good material. I have no qualms with Napster, in fact I buy more CDs because of it.

One last point. All of the 'loses' claimed by the music industry is determined from downloaded songs, however of those songs downloaded, how many get listened to consistently. Also, how many people forgo buying a good CD because they have the MP3s? If 99% of the songs downloaded never would have been bought without MP3s being available, then the lose is only 1% of what is being claimed.

  3. Seperate Distros on Linux Distro for ABIT Hardware · · Score: 2

I think there can be too much of a good thing, in this case distos. When things get too threaded there could be possible. It should be a top priority for these companies, in this case ABIT, to make sure that their support can easily be incorperated into other distrobutions.

  4. NDA Stuff on Will Microsoft Open Windows Source Code? (No!) · · Score: 1

How much stuff would you actually be able to use, a lot of stuff has to be NDA.

  5. The real story on Telnet into Dreamcast? · · Score: 2

Ok so from previous posts we know that they are filtering the 12345 etc ports. Thus stopping BO and other such harrasment. We also know he is connecting through his school. Now what ports are 'open,' well it's the 80 and 23. To follow up we all know what 80 and 23 are used for. The simple answer is that his school is blocking these ports so you can't run servers. In fact I'm suprised that 21 isn't showing the same thing. We see that nobody else is getting this, and with his web broswer open he was useing the other ports for the browsing, notice they are not filtered. Come on people we are smarter then this.
