As far as I'm concerned, cable companies - outlying components of the bigger telecommunications empires that we keep hearing about - will never be able to compete with DSL services. This is not due to their technical performance, but rather, due to their commitment (or lack thereof) to providing reliable customer service. Locally, contacting the cable company (Comcast in these parts) for support, billing services, and what-not has never been anything but a nightmare, whereas DSL services, lacking the marketing power and range of cable services, typically provide an almost "small town" sense of one community member helping another out.
For all I know, this could just be my personal experience, but I've heard similar reports from other folks in my area.
