If you want an Open Source IDE to hack around, try CodeBlocks (see my url). It's GPL'ed and is currently being ported to Linux (volunteers welcome, BTW):)
When we're about to release a new version of our software, we only focus on fixing bugs and adding important requested features. And of course, there are the all-famous CVS branches.
In any case I'm glad the Linux development process has taken this approach.
