I did an art project for one of my studio classes based on people ability to extract meaning from randomness that was very much like the one described in the article. I took the spoken text of theBook of Genesis and chopped it up each time the reader paused for a period or comma. The result was 104 fragments ranging from 1 to 8 seconds in length.
When played randomly the pieces often came together in interesting ways, of course it's the interesting ones that we as humans pick up on ignoring the random noise.
Afterwards the file with the highest play count was "God made the expanse, and divided the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so." with 128 plays followed by "Cattle" with 80 the rest continued to devalue until "and every tree, which bears fruit yielding seed." with 39, with no obvious connection between length and plays.
Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like it would be hard to hide whatever mechanism is used to 'unlock' protected files if the source is free to be searched through. Apple's DRM, while proprietary, is based on an open audio format and has been cracked. Microsoft's DRM, however, which is not based on an open standard seems immune to all but the most basic real-time microphone to speakers/soundcard kind of hacks.
Can anyone involved in this project clarify how something can be both open and tamper proof.
For those that are still wondering what triple-X means, let's be specific... They are talking about pornography.
That's all there is to understand about it. All it means is that if I randomly type in nice-tits.xxx I can be sure that the site I get will have pictures of exposed breasts and not something like nice-tits.org a bird watching site.
When I look at the lists of torrents, although each torrent is identified in the category column as 'video', 'software' etc. but these categories are not links. There seems to be no way to look at all the torrents from one category, just the search and what is listed on the frontpage. That said I think that projects like IBiblo are wonderful and I'm very glad to see them adopting BT for distribution (as long as there are still ftp/http ways of getting files that may not be as popular). I just wish I could look at all the videos, or music without the other things mixed in.
You should check out PresentMovie. It's a shareware application that lets you play Quicktime and mpeg files full screen. If you're using windows you can use Qucktime Alternative which also supports full screen playback.
Wow, I didn't know slashdot put the URL in brackets for you after links, I always thought people were just being considerate. Sorry for being a n00b, this is my first post.
