  1. Wouldn't it also... on The Downide of Your ISP Turning to Gmail · · Score: 1

..improve up in access speed? If the mail servers are being run by the ISPs which are closer to the users than Google mail servers, this should greatly increase access time as well right?

It probably starts off with inquisitiveness or need (in my case it was because of an academic related project).

Then it takes some getting used to, during which you learn a lot of things which you previously read in textbooks but never really understood.

    Then in Rasmus's words it's Oxytocin! :p

What about SourceForge? I mean the concept is neat right? Write your own code, share it around get people involved. Most of the popular applications are available off sourceforge and are active till date!

Social Networking sites may be the talk of the town, but from a developers perspective (behind the scene) I would have to say SourceForge is one of the best things that happened!

  4. Finally, a ray of hope! on Harvard Law Professor Urges University to Fight RIAA · · Score: 5, Insightful

It is fantastic and the right thing that was needed. A reputed university such as Harvard propagates the fight against the RIAA. Why does it make such a difference when Harvard does it? Well, we all know that University of Wisconsin (Madison), albeit respected, does not match to the global reputation and brand recall that comes with an Ivy league university such as Harvard. Harvard's name is familiar to everyone around the world. Students in India, China, Pakistan the UK, everyones knows of Harvard. Even the crowd that isn't aware of the education system in other countries (the US), knows of Harvard.

So, Harvard fighting the RIAA, if publicized correctly by the media, will get the attention of everyone around the world. Take the MIT dean issue that came up recently, for example. That was splashed all across the news channels everywhere in the world!
I am currently in India and it was quite a talk here when the MIT news came out. I'm talking about local news channel covering the story! If the same happens with Harvard's move, is could almost be certain that people can will be educated more about the problem and its impact on internet downloads.

  5. Patents: From bad to worse. on Microsoft Is Sued For Patent Violation Over .NET · · Score: 4, Interesting

The patent issue in the US is going/gone from bad to worse. The retrieval form is bloody tough for any regular developer to sit and verify whether or not what he just developed is actually patent free or not! For all we know, there are a ton of ideas, not limited to computers alone, that have been developed by some really smart people who don't know whether or not their idea falls under some patent statement, fearing which, the inventor hasn't brought his creation under the public eye!

You're right. That beside, there's this new trend catching on with *today's youth* about having the things others have! Half of them already have an Ipod and other half will soon follow!
