If SETI is such a long shot that no one thinks will yield any results, what is the risk? Wasting money? So? Who cares if some grad students, eccentrics, and maybe some foundations waste their money? That wouldn't be the first time, that's for sure. Calling it risky at the same time you claim it won't produce any results is sort of a circular argument, isn't it?
