I buy dvds because they are cheap and fun to watch. I am way too busy to go through the bullshit it takes to pirate movies and am too busy online to waste time downloading pirate copys. Its just better and faster to actually buy the things anyway.
I think the real problem is that MOST(not all) people who pirate get a sense of self worth from "getting the movie before anyone else" or their superior "hacking ability". Its about bragging rights.
I personally would rather recieve praise and acceptance though the thing i do in the real world to help others, how I treat my family and my cooking. than being the coolest hack nug brother on the net.
