i'm building an mp3/cdplayer for my car... the distro's gunna be on a flashrom and the mp3's are gunna be held on cdroms so i don't have to worry about hard drives being bounced or melting or anything and so i can power down without worrying about "not cleanly unmounting" nor portable but whatever...

i run a small studio from my puter i use a $400 EVENT DARLA 20 bit 2 in 8 out card with a morola 80MIPS processor which does all A/D D/A converting for me so the CPU can run the rest of the machine and do FX and crap like that. for software i use cakewalk pro audio which is the best PC based recording suite (well except for pro tools which werks on pc's now i believe)
EVENT does not even have NT drivers for my sound card so how can i expect them to write unix drivers?!
how hard is make drivers for linux so don't have to reboot my 9x box between TAKES!
should i get the o reilly book and just start coding? and what language should i write them in?

the only reason i use X is so i can copy and paste stuff around and talk to my windows friends with gaim and licq (ok i have a spammmable hotmail account too) linux was not designed to be a pretty desktop OS all u people that _need_ a GUI should be happy with what you have (if u use window maker of course) maybe if someone wants a pretty desktop *nix they should talk to apple and port OSX over to x86...

u can put files on mindisc but the drives are expensive as well as the media i'm building an mp3 player and for a week i looked and looked and it was not worth the money right now the safest way to go with mp3 is either laptop hard drive or cdrom with a buffer so it encodes ahead and there is no skipping mpg123 has settings for buffer size u can actually have it encode the whole darn mp3 b4 it starts to play;)
