You're just describing a PC basically. Consoles are good because they're simple. Developers only have to handle one set of specs and can fine tune the end experience just the way they want. Customers (parents, gift givers) know that their games will work as intended on their system.
With a little more RAM and a modern day graphics card the PS3 and Xbox 360 could easily do beautiful high framerate 1080p 3D gaming. The current gen of consoles has lasted for a decent while because they're already "good enough" in the graphics department. I actually find it kind of relieving to know that I can't tweak things, because I spent far too much time overclocking and messing with detail settings when I had a PC. With a console I just deal with graphics as they are (which is actually pretty damn good in some games) and focus on the gameplay. I think the next gen is going to last even longer. This is a good thing for those that don't always want to be paying for upgrades.
Doesn't matter, as long as your opponents have the same limitations. It's still frustrating at times, but it got me out of the PC upgrade cycle for a while, and it's been a good experience. Console graphics of this generation have definitely been approaching "good enough" in my book, and the next generation will definitely last a good while too. Even in PC gaming recently there haven't been many games pushing the latest hardware to the limits.
I suppose this kind of explains why we apparently become less able to learn new things as we get older.. if you try to apply all of your experience/assumptions to new situations then you can end up with poorer performance than if you just acted like you don't know anything.
Not trolling, just saying what I think. I'm sure I've heard of Apple pulling apps from the app store, and even devices.. I don't follow all the sensationalist stories as much as your average geek though I guess.
That would be understandable if I were playing in the novice mode, but my original post was actually me playing in "veteran" mode. When I tried novice mode things were much more of a tie.. ended up being about 18 wins each, and 12 ties. It seems to me that in veteran mode the computer doesn't predict what you are going to do so much as what the average human would do..
When I tried novice I actually did a lot worse, we were tied for wins, though with 2/3 as many ties as wins after about 50 games.. seems I was much better able to predict what the computer was predicting on the "veteran" mode.
Like I said I think that is because veteran mode is adapted to a very generic play-style, which you and I don't seem to have since we're trying to anticipate what the computer is doing, rather than just following what we think are random or unpredictable patterns.
Why would you want to stop your mother using Facebook? If she wants to use it, why not? Seriously. Targeted ads? Embarrassing photos? What? Unless your mother is actually Sarah Connor, I don't think it's a big deal.
That depends what you define as "bad". I look at porn, but I don't plan on cheating with partners, renting hookers, going on a drugs binge, whatever. Sure, it might be a little embarrassing for me for some people to even know that I have ever browsed for porn, but I doubt anything I've ever done would get me kicked out of office if I was a politician, etc. If I do something, I generally don't give a fuck who knows I've done it.
If every book was 99 cents it would hardly be a big deal. You could buy the book for friends and family and it could still end up cheaper than what you pay already.
Seriously, 99 cents is "too high" because you can't resell or return the book? Who would need to buy a "used" copy if books were that cheap anyway? That's cheaper than most current used books already!
And why would you need to return an eBook - it's hardly going to be defective, and if the download was in fact corrupted, they would push it out to your reader again on request. You can't return a book simply because you "didn't like it" - or at least I'm hoping you can't. You can't get your money back at a theater if you didn't like the movie, or get a refund of your cable service because there were no good movies on on a certain day. You pays your money, you takes your chances. At 99c it's hardly a big deal, especially if you also base your purchases on recommendations from people who have similar tastes.
Pulling books without notice would be a big deal to me. I'd expect it of Apple of course, but not so much of Amazon. And if Amazon did do such a thing they'd probably provide a refund, their customer service has always been excellent in my book.. no pun intended.
It's not ESP, it's just that the computer is adapted to common human selection traits based on the last few hands (seems it maybe only uses the last 4 hands as a reference for what you're going to do next according to the "see what the computer is thinking" tab). So if you act differently, then it will take thousands of games for it to catch up to your style. Maybe if I played against the "dumb" version it would do better as it may learn my "style" immediately. I'm not sure of my style exactly, but I was kind of trying to guess what the computer thought I would do, then doing something else.. like I would play the same hand 3 times in a row because generally nobody would be stupid enough to do that.
Try using a random number generator instead of what you think is you being random. It seems to use the last 4 moves you made as a predictor of your next move, though I was using its moves to influence my own.
My score is 12 wins, 11 ties, 5 losses so far, starting to get bored. If you select what the computer "incorrectly predicted you would throw" it often lets you win, and other times I just choose randomly to fuck with it.
Eh, it's popular to bash everything on tech sites, at least when it comes to the commenters. The editors of the articles on Slashdot and most other tech sites seem to be obsessed with Apple toys though, so I'm not surprised that they allow articles unfairly bashing Android.
My flatmate was trying to tell me a few weeks how Android devices are much more likely to contain illegal software, blah blah.. might be true, but it might have been based on "evidence" such as this story. There are an awful lot of jailbroken iPhones out there too though, and personally I choose to only use legal software.

Indeed. My phone actually kicks my netbook in the teeth when it comes to video playback, as well as power consumption. A modest processor with decent graphics hardware is all you need for basic multimedia, web browsing and such.
Surely they must recognise the name from Turing Car racing? It's almost as well known as Fermelab 1.
For some reason I find your post jocular. Good show, old chap.

What exactly would qualify as "more than that", may I ask?

The irony is quite hilarious to be sure.
I posted AC cause i'll get modded to oblivion.
Not to mention wildly offtopic

(not that I think this is a Slashvertisement, but it is something that all of us should know already)
And yet, this story is also on alterslash :p
