Sorry, I don't know why I'm being such a bastard today, maybe someone in the office has PMS..
I think I'd prefer a couple of bruises to being permanently blinded.. though I've never been hit by a water cannon or rubber bullets, maybe it's not as fun as it sounds?:P
People will still notice if the drivers contain spyware that is trying to send information back to ATI, and even other more nasty problems. It is easier to check for this stuff if the source is open, but when you are a company like ATI, that pretty much relies on geeks as early adopters to drive new hardware sales, you can't really afford to piss them off by having malicious or invasive code in your drivers, can you? I mean it's not the same as with Sony selling CDs to the great non-unwashed masses.
Yeah, nobody should EVER use a binary that they haven't written from scratch themself - they should start off writing up an assembler in binary, then write a decent c compiler in assembly. Then, they should write all their own libraries, and they can start on writing their own OS (or at least thoroughly inspect every single line of source in the OS that they are choosing to compile). In fact, that's not acceptable.. they should really design their own computer first to avoid the security implications of using buggy x86 processors..
While it's obviously not as transparent as open source, you could always disassemble it if you're really bothered? Or you could just say thanks for actually writing this in the first place, and then use it to drive your display. They have no obligation to provide source, especially when they are using 3rd party licensed technologies...
I am not so bothered about how an app is designed, I don't make much use of office productivity type apps, but you're right that consistency helps people to be able to use apps. I think it must be the rendering engine or something in X that just gives it a more solid feel than Windows, for things like moving windows around.. OSX is great from a consistency point of view, though the actual basic Mac theme isn't that nice looking to me.. I preferred when the close/max/min buttons were all a single colour. In fact I prefer the original Classic design to brushed aluminium! =P
How about stability, performance and configurability/flexibility to look and run however you want it to = I'm surprised more fuss isn't made about just how good Linux can look compared to glum old Windows - that sort of thing would attract over the users who don't really do much apart from listen to music and browse the intarweb. I recently gave someone at work an old PIII 500Mhz box with Ubuntu - they then installed XP but decided to go back to Ubuntu just because it was a lot faster for browsing. When you take gaming and Windows only applications out of the equation (I know they're very a big part of it, of course..), there isn't really any positive for Windows other than the fact that people are already familiar with it. I've always liked Macs too, by the way, though the iPod cattle and iFanBois these days kind of make me ashamed to admit it. It's nice to see Apple succeeding though. I wouldn't mind if they had a monopoly instead of MS, I've always enjoyed using Mac OS more than Windows. In fact I've always enjoyed any other OS better than Windows.. Mac OS Classic, Amiga Workbench (version 3 with a hard drive - not so much version 1 on a floppy!), Linux.. Windows is just kind of soul-less and generally feels like a poorly constructed house of cards, held together by staples, blu-tac and DirectX.
These days, all the OSes are getting more and more similar to each other anyway, all trying to duplicate each others' best features.. there's not much to pick between them if you're only concerned with features and are not concerned about the underlying technology.
Yeah I was kidding, sorry if I was being too much of an ass:P I did feel that games where you can die and then just be brought back to life are different from anything you can do in reality, but I was thinking more of actual games with rules, that obey reality, rather than games that you play in your head, where anything can happen.. I guess since I was brought up on computer games (we had a Commodore 100 when I was about 4 probably..) then I'm not used to having to do that (not to say that I have never played games purely based on imagination, but I probably haven't done so for over a decade..).
Yeah, many's the time when I used to go on a rampage out into the streets and beat the crap out of everyone, safe in the knowledge that when I died I'd be magically regenerated or reincarnated at the nearest checkpoint. Then there was the time when I went into space by rotating bricks falling from the sky, organising them into lines of power which disappeared into the ether. I could never beat my great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather's high score at the-idea-where-we-rotate-the-falling-bricks-into-l ines-of-power-which-then-disappear-into-the-ether though. Video games always copy reality - there truly have been no new ideas in gaming since the invention of computers.
People are just making crass jokes and whining rather than actually recognising that this is a great step in the right direction for finding a cure/prevention for AIDs. I hope that all the cynicism about drug companies ensuring it never gets out is unfounded...
Measuring citations by how often they are cited is what I was referring to, and while it is possibly a good measure of how good an article is, it doesn't tell you whether that article is any better than one done in another language..
Yep, saying something like if someone disagrees with you on one topic then you'll stereotype them and just not listen to them again. Of course if someone starts saying other people are stupid and shouldn't be listened to, it shows they have a lack of respect for others, and maybe that in turn means that their opinions aren't worth listening too...:p
You do know that we speak the same language as y'all in the UK, right?:P The citation thing does sound like a load of bunk to me, unless they check every citation in every article/paper/essay the world in all languages..?
They don't sound silly really, but it shows that the number of Windows distros is increasing too! I'm sure there's some irony in there somewhere.
The fact that they purposely restrict Windows rather than just try to make it more suitable to users' needs doesn't help either. One of the best things about Linux is that you can turn pretty much any distro into the 'Ultimate' version if you so wish by downloading extra packages or compile apps from source. With Windows, you're stuck with whatever you start with, even if your needs change. And you don't even get anything amazing with the 'Ultimate' version.. such a rip-off. If the world had any clue about the possibilities available to them today, we really would all be running Linux (and we'd have Linux versions of all the commercial games and software required for that to be practical), or possiby some OS that is even better (Amiga Workbench anyone? just kidding)?
Well, one piece of evidence was a weird sense of peace I had one night (and commented on because it was so unusual) while driving home from a Church communion service with my mum, then later that night we found out my dad was dead. I guess another family member would have to die to reproduce that and see if it was just a very bizarre coincidence, or not. I guess that just sounds pretty stupid, but it's true, and one of the things I remember when I have doubts as to the nature of reality =P
Though once you have the evidence you could say it is no longer 'belief'.. and while it's hard to know whether to take events and feelings as evidence, I do personally feel I have some. It is interesting to think that God could just be a highly evolved being anyway. I find the fact that anything exists at all to be pretty illogical, but it's hard to say it doesn't exist:P
One designed by a nerd who lost 4.1 of his fingers in a horrific tape drive accident back in 2005.. I've never seen so much red tape.. o_0

Pfft.. in Soviet Russia, welding helmet demands YOU!
"Of course there are precautions that can be used against this weapon, propper googles should do it, but not everyone will have them."
:)
You certainly can find all manner of amazingly useful things on google these days
...
In Soviet Russia, meme fails YOU!

That's right... we were surfing the iWeb! It's kind of like the web, but better.

I didn't say it won't happen, I just said I hope it doesn't. I don't care if it's good business, it's disgusting if companies actually do that.

There wasn't any budget left for carrots.

I think he jus phrased it a bit too verbosely. He said that some people are bastards who are never happy.

Well, feelings are, events not so much, but they could of course just be coincidences. Life has an awful lot of coincidences..
Though once you have the evidence you could say it is no longer 'belief'.. and while it's hard to know whether to take events and feelings as evidence, I do personally feel I have some. I think the same thing when people say they don't believe in 'God' :P
