The reality is though, that many of the largest software companies are raising their stakes in open source technology and many of their big customers are starting to realise the savings.
IBM for example dumped its own webserver a few years back and now invests millions in open-source projects. By simple expanding the base functionality, they are able to quickly develop commercial products, such as their Eclipse-based development tools.
