  1. As a developer who has used QNX... on Ford Ditches Microsoft Partnership On Sync, Goes With QNX · · Score: 1

I have to say it is a nice operating system to use. It has its quirks though. We had issues getting it to run on somewhat recent hardware - it wouldn't even complete its bootup. That said, if you are able to get it to run on your hardware, it is rock-solid. Driver development for it was a breeze. I had gone from never writing a driver for it to having a usable one in a day or so. The driver was mature enough after about 2 weeks that I haven't had to touch it since in 6 years. I haven't used the development tools for their UI much so I can't speak to their usability.

I don't know for sure, but in general, ephemeris calculations rely heavily on time. Now they probably convert everything to a common reference frame, J2000 for example based on January 1, 2000, but I'm not sure. I know we typically worry when our stuff rolls over on the new year due to similar issues. The difference is my stuff doesn't end up flinging astronauts into the ground if its wrong. For those who don't know what it means, ephemeris is used to determine position in space. IANARS (Rocket Scientist), but I work for a bunch of them.

  3. Re:Just get used to it! on Left Sided Windows Scrollbars? · · Score: 1

You're not alone. I am predominantly "right-handed" in that I swing a baseball bat like a righty and write with my right hand. I used to use my trackball at work in my right hand (partially since I was used to using my right hand for mousing operations and partially since I have not seen a left-handed trackball), but when my hand started hurting, I switched to a mouse and using my left hand. It took a few days to get used to but I'm very proficient with it now. I also eat left-handed or so I'm told. I just don't keep switching my fork and knife - I look at it more of an efficiency of stuffing my face thing instead of a right vs left handed thing. I don't think driving is a right vs left thing either - look at the difference between GB and the USA. The British use their left hands to "shift".

  4. What about pointing? on Shining a Light on Interplanetary Communication · · Score: 1

I would think that pointing (or aiming for lay-folk) would be the limiting factor in laser communication. It is a fairly difficult task to point a spacecraft accurately and to have the pointing accurate enough for millions of miles would be very difficult. The nice thing about radio waves is they don't require super accurate pointing, even for a high gain antenna. I would imagine that the whole benefit of better bandwidth is achieved by drastically increasing the gain on axis. IANARS (rocket scientist) and IANASCRFE (spacecraft RF engineer), but I work with a bunch or each.

Actually memorizing is the only way to learn certain things. Think back to when you first learned math or the alphabet. With the exception of finger counting, those were not necessarily intuitive things back when I was younger (maybe I'm just stupid). You need to memorize the fact that 2+2=4 so that you can go on and do more difficult problems that cascade from that fact. Don't completely discount memorization just because you think it is "a bad way to learn anything". $0.02.

We also need to know what kind of timing performance you need. If you absolutely need to eek out all the speed you can, you better stay away from malloc/new except on startup.

Yeah...I can just imagine 100 retirees to 1 worker ratio. That sounds like it is achievable and self-sustaining. Or do people have to work until their are 675 now?

  8. Re:Wait a second. on Jobs Resists Music Industry Pressure · · Score: 1

I love the sig. Anyways, I have never downloaded a song from Napster, Kazaa, etc. I have never downloaded a song from iTunes either, and I don't intend to start. I don't like DRM and I like the warm fuzzy feeling of having a piece of physical media that I can look at and hold. While I may get laughed out of /. for this, I actually like some of the new music that is coming out of the record industry but I have only bought one or two CDs a year for the last several years (and the last few CDs I bought were second-hand). I don't like the idea of feeding the greedy accountants/lawyers that the RIAA/Recording industry have. I'm sorry for all the artists out there that are not getting their $0.05 from me. I would gladly pay them for their music and I would gladly pay for the engineering costs associated with the production of the music too.
