  1. Re:Rise of the Geek on Gaiman and Whedon Discuss the Rise of the Geek · · Score: 2, Informative

Actually, Buffy was a successful movie before it was a TV show. The movie was basically a comedy, along the lines of Clueless, and was very different from the show.

While I did enjoy the movie when I was younger, it was critically panned and considered a box office failure so I'm not really sure how you consider it a success. That's why, in the early days of the television series, Whedon was having a lot of network opposition to reviving what they considered a 'dead horse'.

  2. Rise of the Geek on Gaiman and Whedon Discuss the Rise of the Geek · · Score: 5, Interesting

That's the beauty of Whedon's work, he's the quintessential geek and he manages to showcase the self-deprecating humour so inherent in people with interests outside the mainstream.

Reading an outline for Buffy 10 years ago, you would have instantly assumed it was destined for a short-lived run and eventual shunting to a 2am timeslot before dissapearing into obscurity. Instead it became a cult hit, ran for seven seasons and spawned a massive franchise, including one of the few successful spin-off television shows.

Firefly, with it's mesh of sci-fi and old west, would have seemed likely to suffer the same fate. However after it's network axing, fan support (to which Whedon has paid tribute) has seen a movie release.

Both of these shows have succeeded, in part, due to Whedon's offbeat writing and his affinity for geek references. They've been elevated to cult status and after all, you can't beat a geek for obsessing about a television show.

  3. Proposed changes to the industry on Flash Memory with Copy Protection · · Score: 5, Funny

As a fan of the music industry but not music itself, I wait with great anticipation for the day when we are finally rid of the antiquated notion of personal rights.

I propose a mandatory tithe of 10% of each individual's monthly earnings, that would be put straight into the coffers of music industry to stamp out music piracy once and for all.

Obviously to accomplish this worthy goal we'd have to make some sacrifices, the ability to purchase music online would be one of the first to go. As many slashdotters have pointed out in the past, DRM and similar technologies are always beaten and thus are unenforceable in the long term.

Instead of listening to music in the privacy of your home, I suggest RIAA-run facilities allowing a selected number of people to listen to carefully selected 'Top of the Pops' singles in a structured environment. Obviously a strip-search with full body cavity check, careful screening, drug-testing and metal detectors would be necessary to prevent unauthorized reproduction of the music. Needless to say, RIAA goons would be on hand with truncheons and electroshock equipment to assure proper relaxation and enjoyment.

This utopia can only come about with the help of right-minded individuals such as yourselves. I ask slashdotters to delete their mp3/ogg collections, turn themselves into the RIAA for re-neducation and fight for this glorious future.

And when the parents are unaware of their child, it is bad parenting. Sometimes a warning isn't enough.

It's ridiculous to assume that the average parent can properly monitor their childs activity in a still-evolving area like peer to peer. My parents had little or no idea what I was doing on a computer and, if anything, the technology learning curve has increased sharply.

  6. 1.0.7 source on Firefox 1.0.7 Released · · Score: 1

For those who've been looking for it (LFS people and a few randoms on forums), the source for Firefox 1.0.7 won't be available on the Mozilla FTP for a while yet. There's a pending bug, apparentally to do with the nightly being rebranded to 1.0.7, and the devs will release it when it's been fixed (no estimated time was given).
