Is it sad that I've actually written VAX assembly before? Ah, college. I still find myself floored by the fact that someone, somewhere thought it was absolutely necessary to have an assembly language instruction for calculating polynomials. Sigh. VMS was running on top, by the way.:P

For those of you who are unaware, RIT has Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, and Computer Science departments in addition to the IT department which Phelps is a professor for. In essence, he's not teaching about software development. That's not to say he can't make some good points, or that his classes are worthless, but remember where the words are coming from.
I unfortunately was the victim of a very similar circumstance. I recently graduated from high school and my district as well used the oh so wonderfull Bess filtering software. The major problem I feel you're going to run up against is the CIPA and the de-facto mandating of censorware in order to recieve E-rate federal funding. It's unlikely that you'll be able to convince the district to eliminate the filtering software entirely, but you might be able to suggest alternative, less offensive forms of censorware. Talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place.
ps - Continue the good fight:)
