Well, since P2P networks are here to stay, it appears that the only thing musicians can do is try to live with it. I can cite here the example of Jonathan Coulton, who actually released most of his songs via a Creative Commons license (Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike, free as in beer). He actually does get some money from donations, as in one of his posts he mentioned becoming a hundredaire.
So now I guess that, after reading his success story, all other musicians and record companies will install a BitTorrent tracker and start sharing away.
