Summers for teachers ain't free time any more (maybe a generation or two ago, but not now). And, the 9 months is mostly 24/7 sort of work: grading, planning, preparing, researching, doing paperwork...
Post them a day or two before an exam. That way students can indeed avoid class, but they can't avoid the problems they cause themselves by skipping.
I'm sure I've seen CSI use the fact that printers can be traced to solve a case or two. This is old news, sort of.
