But this is what i don't get, a light flash should be okay for now and I think would make everyone think Jobs isn't so full of it. Lets say the flash banners on Slashdot, those shouldn't kill an iPhone and with the way flash now allows you to explore its internals you'd think they could set it up to simply pull meta-data too see if the flash object is worthy or not if so run it with the bare minimum API usage.

But i do like your concept about them having more features than competing SmartPhones, like the ABS breaks and ESP features in cars, they only do it if they must to keep current against their competitors.

Wow, ummm your pretty passionate about this.

The developments for HTML5 are still relatively new and I'm going to take a reserved stance on this before claiming its the long awaited solution that we've been looking for.

Unless you have an article or piece of information that I've missed to the contrary? If not I'll stick to my original assumption.

The whole Quake 2 thing i believe was a great proof of concept, but really that's were its all at, proof of concept at this stage not production worthy nor easy and accessible. I'm not sure on one thing though and this is possibly something you'd know but how robust the Application Cache with the iPhone? from what i can gather its still pretty basic. If users are stuck pulling massive amounts of data to get their apps to work (depending upon complexity of course) there is another delimiting factor.

Companies have a right to sell goods and services as they wish, Adwords, Windows, etc is all fine by me. Even Apple has the right to sell "their own services" but the truth is flash does help circumvent the app store and make it easier developers to churn out free apps that can't be controlled.

HTML5 even though is as great concept and I can defiantly see becoming the new buzz word that all next generation smartphones will slap at the top of their specifications lists as an important selling point. I still think its too new.

It could very well be the "app store killer" and solve the issues that android is facing with Vodafone. I'm sure you'd agree the uneven standards that all smartphones are plagued with is a huge growth stunt in that particular part of the industry because nothing is really that portable.

I guess voting libs might put another minister in charge rather than Conroy, someone who might impose a smart solution rather than whats already put forward.

I believe the filter is being sold in the wrong way, if they want to maintain border control on what gets into the country, just like what we do with immigration, mail transit, shipping etc. Then that's fine go right ahead, it wont change my internet life one bit.

At present stage, it leaves too much possibility of what could be done with the filter, restricting websites that are really not doing any harm and what it boils down too is if you try to get a non IT savvy person to sell an IT based concept, it gets misunderstood and then becomes poorly executed.

I've always said throwing the away internet and rebuilding it would be good idea :P

On the flip side to your argument if some guy from South America sends a box of Cocaine in the mail it gets picked up and investigated. Of course with child porn its different, there isn't a swabbing gadget or sniffer dog that can find it, you'd have to look at every letter that comes in.

So it begs the question, aside from the ease of distribution the internet plays with child pornography it doesn't make that much difference either way. There will always be that dark net / black market which will transmit this stuff behind closed doors such as private forums and peer-to-peer, and traditionally via snail mail aswell.

The filter is redundant as Google already filters out these keywords, photos, etc.

The question begs for a real motive as to what the Govts main intention was. I believe, and I go back to my comment earlier in another post, that this filter was a means for the pollie's to gain a precedent to mitigate the internet for themselves, just like AQUIS is for international mail and travel.

I also believe it was sold incorrectly and under the wrong precedence, if they spelled out how peoples privacy would be breached and offered acceptable precursors as to why that person's privacy was breached, it would of been a less resistant argument for them and perhaps they could of won it.

All they said is we're going to blow a massive wad of cash and allow Mr Conroy to play god with the internet.

The filter wouldn't of changed the kiddy porn distribution one bit because I'd imagine that stuff would be done mostly peer-to-peer.

Regardless of Govt, I think Google's done a fine job stopping what it can and that adding a filter on ISP's is quite redundant.

I always thought this filter campaign was simply a legal thawte at privacy allowing the Govt later to scrutinize peoples access better.

Yeah, only a misguided geek or a member of NAMBLA would of modded this as Troll. Don't get me wrong though Mr Troll-Flagger, I hate Conroy with a passion but I do get what brendan_hill is saying, and that is filtering is fundamentally a good idea.

Lets look at it this way, how great would it be to have a safe internet? At the moment its like walking down the streets of a bad neighborhood, if your not familiar with the area, you'll most likely get robbed, literally.

And having those looming DDoS attacks from organized crime groups is a kin to the old fashioned bank robberies we had in the wild west. Extorting businesses to hand over cash or they'll shoot someone, in these days its now threaten to kill their IT infrastructure.

Ideally a filter would give us a foundation to eventually build facilities and technology to trump these things but Conroy's attitude was far misguided to create a valuable tool to the internet and was in-turn looked upon as a restriction of freedom.

We still have IP6 to look forward too and the technological benefits it _could_ bring to internet security, but again its something too far off and I'm sure someone is bound to stuff that up to (I know I'm a cynic).

The matter is, VHS wasn't a better format then Beta but Beta never made it too the video stores; Microsoft beat Jobs to the race and had his product out first; half the world has no idea what "Rock Band" is; and people "Google" things they don't "Search" for them any more.
