  1. Then Again... on Satellite Radio Coming in 2001 · · Score: 1

Although this seems great, it also seems expensive -- too expensive for small community funded radio stations to join. Not NPR's, but stations with very select groups of listeners and content.

A slightly different idea is being pushed by the US's FCC. Recently they changed certain rules to make opening a small radio station inexpensive. For around $5000 a person can obtain a license and the equipment to start a small radio station with the broadcast range of about a mid sized town. Sure, this is not nation wide, but it is going to be a great way for different kinds of content to get on the airways. This is very good for those who love both radio and non-top-40 stuff. If these things spring up around the nation, you could even get networks together, like BBS's in Fidonet. Then you could find the same show, anywhere in the country, if the town has a local radio station in the group.

  2. Re:WHO CARES? on Serious CGI Bug in MacOS X Servers · · Score: 1

Most likely, if this was a similar bug in a Linux, it would have not been reported in the same harsh way that many magazines report bugs. Instead it would have been immediately brought to everyone's attention in different way, like a mailing list or bug report. Since there is a large number of people who know the kernel code well the bug would have been fixed in a number of hours, not days. Patches would be easily attained, RPMs built, deps made, and documentation written. Finally, the story at Slashdot would not be as much about the bug, but where to get the fix. I am not a Mac user, but I can say that on linux bugs like these are fixed so fast that there it little time for a global "Reaction".

  3. RedHat in California on Rasterman leaves RedHat · · Score: 2

For all it's worth, I distinctly remember reading about Redhat opening a satellite branch in California. It would make a lot of sense for him to be moving out west to work in the new Redhat office. Then again, he might really be leaving redhat, but if this is the case I would imagine he would say something about it directly, and before he just packs up and leaves.

  4. How it works on Realplayer G2 for Linux · · Score: 3

About an hour ago I downloaded an rpm. My system is pretty normal (AMD 350, 64meg, sb16, RH5.2, 2.2.1). I would consider myself a pretty heavy user of realaudio. This seems to be pretty good, as stuff like this goes. There are no plug-ins, and it still lacks many features, but it works well for what it dose. I tired watching CNN on it, which it did better then the old one. Although I have been only using this for a few hours, I would say for most users, this is an improvement. The README actually had some relevant info about what is not working & left out. Even some Esd info.

Oh, before I forget. This is using a good %18.1 of my memory on simple local clip. CPU usage is down, but memory is way up from the last version. This is not a product for those short on resources. Hope this helps.

  5. Is this Bad? on JWZ resigns from mozilla.org · · Score: 1

All the comments seem to be around the [incorrect] idea that this is another April fools joke, or that this is a sad day. I am thinking more about jwz who has just made a decision it seems like he should have made some time ago. If you visit his web site and read his essay, you will understand. Becides, this could be a good thing for the entire community. He is a great coder, and now he has the opportunity to work *living* projects without the
restrictions it seems like he had been faced with for some time. I wish him luck in where ever he decides to go, and ask that people realize this could be a very good thing for our community
    and jwz. Thanks.
