The only reason I bought Windows 7 Pro 64-bit was to feed my gaming addiction with support over 4GB of RAM and presumably being the next majorly supported platform. It was the least amount I could give to Microsoft to legally continue my habit (the XBox is over twice as much, and they get licensing fees, etc.) I only use it for a game PC and all the rest of my life is in Debian. I wish they'd sell a Windows, Gamer Edition that doesn't have the movie maker and all the other crap I'll never use. I'm still finding things that I need to remove that seem to be put in only to annoy the living shit out of me.

So while I "bought" it, I wouldn't consider the stripped hulk of what I now call Windows 7 something I "use".

Because the government subsidizes corn, so it's cheaper to use than cane/beat sugar... I'm sure there's more than enough politics behind it (and now a national dependence) that it's not going to go away anytime soon.

We've all been forced(?) into consuming HFCS in just about everything from soft drinks to breads. Recently McDs has been selling sweet tea with sugar in it and I've found that if I drink one without eating I tend to get what I can only describe as light headed and I have to eat something to calm it down. I'm sure I have diabetes creeping up on me though. Of course, that's a lot of sugar for one drink so I don't have them often. ;)

    Enjoy what you have!

The way I understood it is that students were "calculating" the list as a set of commands:
    4 + 3 + 2 = 9
now they assume the 9 goes in the ( ) and add 2 to it to get 11 as their answer.

They are interpreting the = as if they were a calculator and the ( ) is where the answer to the first "part" goes.

Personally, I'd like to see an OS driven prompt to have access to things like contacts, messaging and phone access.

If your app needs a contact to send a message, it would have to pass that message to the OS and the OS would prompt the user for the contact to send it to. This way, no apps need access to contacts to send messages for some reason. The same applies to phone numbers, etc.

What's so "medieval" about having something to back up your currency? When you go to the bank and get a loan, don't you have to back that up with some kind of asset? Why should the government be any different? What is it about the government that gives them the right to loan money at an exorbitant amount? Right now it's like giving one of your kids a credit card and next year you give it to your next child without making the first one pay for what they did with it. We need to put Congress on an allowance. By having backing assets to currency, we don't need the Federal Reserve.

The IRS could quite easily be abolished for one of several taxation methods that would be in more direct control by Congressional law. If there was a blanket tax rate, a simple Act (hopefully not like the above) could be voted upon to raise and/or lower the rate and if the citizens didn't like it they simply vote out their representative. There's really no need to tax everyone at 33% and give out refunds the next year through some convoluted tax laws. If we place our Congress on a budget then they have to decide what's the most important issue to resolve on a year to year basis and they'll have to plan ahead if they want to raise money for some reason.

I will agree that it might not be the best thing to do over night. There would have to be a very long transition at this point ... but honestly, I see a lot of logic in what he petitions for.

I don't know what you are referring to concerning clean air and water laws. Care to elaborate? All I could find is blanket speculation with no proof as stated in the following article:

The problem with meta-moderating, is that it's obscured and somewhat random. I've gone to meta and found posts with no moderation even on them. It's not consistent so people don't go in there as much as they should. You also don't get that immediate result as you do with moderating.

Personally, I think it would be better is mod points were obscure and people could all moderate but it would only alter karma if they had points to spend. All mods that do not have points would be considered meta-mods and will count as they do now.
