From my myopic view, ageism is a bigger problem. I was let go from a major computer company during one of their endless rounds of happysizing at the age of 48. With 25+ years of experience and a willingnes to take on almost anything, it still took three years to get back into IT. I learned to loath the word 'overqualified'! That is just a code for "we think you'll charge too much". I'm back working for a good company (at 3/5th of my former salary). Beats working retail.
