Isn't the space station a (NASA's) pet project itself? A justification for needing a shuttle fleet? Given how the station has been sucking down money, and how we've gotten essentially zero scientific results out of it (especially compared to unmanned missions), I personally wouldn't mind if they just let the thing burn up in the atmosphere.
At work, we use network attached storage which keeps hourly snapshots. And then, of course, there are daily incremental backups. I think that is a great feature; how would building something equivalent into Vista be any "worse" (for privacy)? I don't like Microsoft (all my 6 computers at home are Macs), but complaining about this feature (just because it's MS?) is ludicrous...

How about the other way around? If ATI didn't do this, they would be out of business in (N) years. To quote a 2004 interview with Glenn Henry of Centaur-now-Via: "It's clear that the processor is the black hole, and that all silicon is going to fall into it at some point. [...] Those who can do a processor can control their system destiny, and those who don't will end up totally at the mercy of other people, who can shut them out of business right away."
Under this perspective, this acquisition may well be more in ATI's interest than AMD's. Admittedly, it's a mystery why ATI would get paid good money for it.
Another more cynical view is that this is a case of two second-tier companies thinking that by merely combining forces they can bet the incumbents. IMHO, dilution of focus is more like it...
