I basically agree with you, I'm just not sure about having the government take a role in that. The anti trust laws are kind of a double sword.
Another example would be the ATM fee thing going on. If I were a bank, I would just pull out all my ATM out of San Fransisco. Then would the consumer be better off ?
Ok, so Microsoft is a monopoly. I think we all knew that. Having had my share of BSOD, DLL mixups and having had to reinstall Windows quite a few times just to get the system in a stable state, I am certainly no supporter of Microsoft. I have Linux at home and at work, and I can assure you it is more stable. I don't own any MS stocks either, maybe on Maonday I'll wish I had shorted it... The one thing that bothers me though, is that free entreprise and Capitalism are supposed to be a system where anybody can make as much money as they want, if their product is superior. I believe Microsoft can be beaten because Linux (or Be, or BSD, etc...) is BETTER than Windows. Why do we need the government to break up Microsoft. If we can make Linux (or other OS) as good as we want them, then Microsoft will not sell any more Winows, and will break up by itself !
Even before today's bloodbath in the stock market (AMD and Apple both went down 9-10%), they were both in trouble. AMD can barely keep up with Intel, and Apple can't get their hands on enough chips to sell their computers.
It would certainly be good for us computer buyers if AMD could keep forcing Intel to lower their prices. (and lower theirs at the same time...)
Apple had been on a pretty good run, considering their stocks doubled in the last 6 months. I will always remember using my first Macintosh a long time ago, after years of DOS and W3.1 and thinking "woa, this is what a computer should be !"
I think all those companies really need each other if they want to be able to compete against the Wintel business. If AMD doesn't make it, then you can forget about those sub $500 computer !
The 2 things I remember that impressed me most were:
- you could eject the floppy
- the machine knew how to turn itself off.
Of course, at a time when Windows didn't even exist, just using the mouse was something cool !
app_name %s
in your case: gv %s
Check out LinuxForKids.com. It lists educational and games software for children for Linux.
