I run Debian on Sparc because I want a decent, convenient and developer-friendly environment on Sun Blade 100. First I started to compile packages on Solaris but then I found it would take at least a week and probably even more to get a desktop system as good as Linux. Installing Linux took 1 day and made me hayppy much quicker.
Every compile, link,... benchmark and every OS microbenchmark (unixbench,...) was better in Linux except X speed and KDE responsiveness.
GCC 3.1 made quicker code than 2.95 on Ultrasparc II FWIW.

Debian uses gcc-3.1 etc as binary names, you might tell GCC=gcc-3.1 or whatever in Makefile.
