I know you said you didn't like the cordlesses with a box and headset, but what about a normal cordless phone with a headset. Most Midrange 900 Mhz and 2.4 Ghz models allow you to plug in a headset that looks like the one you showed, and attach the handset to your belt or drop it into your pocket. This gives you the added bonus of not needing the headset for short calls, and being able to switch back and forth.
Since The hotsync cradles simply leave the connections bare (there is really no circuitry in the base) when there is no palm in the cradle, you might be able to get away with a y cable or adapter as long as only one palm is in a cradle at a time. If you are afraid of sticking two palms in their cradles at a time, an A-B switch would work. It could be a cheap switch, since a mechanical switch would be no different than inserting and removing the palm itself.

The palm does actually have a backdoor... when it is reset, it runs each application in memory to give it a chance to reinitialize itself. This is why hackmaster can prompt you to reinstall formerly active hacks, for example. This means that a simple reset wouldn't clean up the virus either.
There is still the problem that the palm requires that the user accept any beamed applications, which would give the user plenty of notice that something was going on before the virus was able to start running.
I don't know the circumstances of the lights at the firehouse, but if they never turn the lights out, they will last a lot longer. Turning a light on sends the filament's temperature from room temperature to several hundred celcius in a matter of seconds. Same process in cooling off. Repeat this process several times a day and the fatigue builds up pretty quickly. That's why most lights used in homes burn out relatively quickly.
I suggest you read this book: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mote_in_God's_Eye and its sequel.
The original SawStop table saws did not include a power cord. They were designed for direct connection to 3-phase or split-phase 240.
