Shaped like a large flat kidney bean, it's solid wood (though it weighs less than 2 lbs). The size is perfect for resting on top of the arms of a chair (La-Z-Boy recliner) so it holds the weight of your laptop off your lap. Though it's not designed for laptops I haven't had any problems with overheating.
