The following is based on my personal attempts to get people in my office to use Octave in stead of Matlab: Although Octave is an impressive work, its graphics support is quite limited. Matlab provides very nice, interactive graphics. Until Octave can do this (and seamlessly support ALL Matlab function calls), there will always be a market for Matlab.

You ain't kiddin. We are looking at quad G4 boards for a project we are starting up now. A fully populated quad G4 VME board with 256MB pushes $60k. Ouch.
Sorry, but you have this wrong. If you wish to release a program that uses *any* GPL'd code in it, your *entire program* must be released under the GPL. This is where the "virus" thing comes from, and where the objections come from. Releasing your new code under the GPL is the "price" you pay for being able to incorporate other GPL'd work into your product.
I own a Honda Insight. Lifetime average: 66 MPG. I routinely get 75 MPG on freeway commutes, 80 MPG every once in a while.
I read a story about a guy who drove around the British island in an Insight and averaged somewhere in the 110 MPG ballpark (setting a record).
The xprize should be a little more far-reaching.
