Although limited to one operating system only both "Linux Developer & User" and "Linux Format" magazines have coding sections that address multiple languages, system details, mini-project ideas, although they are both targeting the beginner coder.
How is it that 1 or 2 cents per mile will cover the current fuel taxes? Simple math:
Let's take the average: 1.5 cents per mile. My car does 26 miles a gallon on average, so that's 39 cents a gallon, compared to the current 18.5 cents per gallon, that's a nice 110% tax increase. I like how the government sneaks in additional taxes as a new way of collecting existing taxes!
Just my 0.02 cents per mile.
I'm doing a PhD in Engineering and have a family, my wife is also doing her PhD in Engineering, and we have a three year old and three months old... and oh yeah, forgot about my full time job:) and somehow still able to read slashdot.
I'm not going to lie and say it is easy, or even manageable... it is freaking hard... but it boils down to this: if you love what you do, you don't mind sacrificing other things for it, including sleep. But you have to prioritize.
If you think of going back to school the same way I think about visiting my dentist (too many root canals), DON'T DO IT! need I say more!
On the other hand, if you truly enjoy what you do at school, you'll love it and gladly give up other stuff for it. AGAIN you need to get your priorities straight: Family 1st, Work 2nd, School somewhere in there, and lastly Sleep. Sometimes I get it all mixed up, but I try my best, and keep on telling my self it will eventually be over. And guess what... it is almost over:)
If I'm to apply the same logic to regular mail, well, regular mail is doomed too; it's full of phishing, spam, and spoofing. I guess I'm not sending anything by mail from now on!! Duh!
If you get a letter from a car dealer stating that you won $3000 in credit if you buy one of his cars, do you automatically go and buy one? NO. Same thing goes for email, you don't open all emails and follow all links blindly.
The problem is with educating people how to use email and the Internet as a whole. When enough people stop being click-happy... spamers will lose interest as no one will be paying for such a service, and phishers/spoofers won't find enough people to fall for their tricks.
Simply, educate people about this powerful tool before you through them in! this is not only for email, it goes for anything to do with the internet and any form of communication as a whole.
As an Arab, a Jordanian, a regular Slashdot reader, and a computer addict my self, I feel compelled to ask this question. But first a little about why I'm asking... I started my addiction when I was in Jordan at an early age in the mid 80's, and moved to the United States in the late 90's. So I think by now I'm out of touch with how things are advancing in our part of the world. I used to be considered as a knowledgeable geek, but that was a long time ago when I had more time on my hands.:(
My questions are (really it is the same LONG question:)
Now that online communities and computer volunteering (especially OSS) is growing on the highest rate in the western part of the glob, how do you see participation and understanding of such participation in Jordan in specific, and the middle east in general?
Do you see the Arab population is going toward a more active role, or maintaining a technology consumer role as it used to be in the old days? Do you feel that you are a loner in what you do and contribute? Or do you get a whole lot of "Hey man that is soo cool, how would I start contributing like you do?"
Last but not least, from your day-in-day-out interaction with the local-online-communities, when do you see us (Arabs) technologically maturing to a level where we can be a major contributing force in the OSS global community... is it happening now?
May be one of those days we'll meet... after all Jordan is a small place:)
