  1. Re:Will they open documents? on AT&T Forwarding All Internet Traffic to NSA? · · Score: 1

I am so glad I use verizon as my ISP.

I would imagine that this article also applies to traffic on the backbone segments that AT&T owns (or any router that AT&T owns that is in a hop in a traceroute to a service/webpage/whatever that you are using). This pretty much means that your location on the internet grid, and not your provider, will dertermine if the feds get your info.

  2. Re:Internet Stalking 101 on IRS to Allow Tax Preparers to Sell Your Info? · · Score: 1

After having worked for a marketing company that brokered data as a major part of it's income, I have to comment. There are a TON of shady people in the data brokering arena. It was three years ago when I still worked there, but I was on a conference call where a set of leads was being offered for sale that had, and I quote:
first name, last name, address, email, phone, and credit card number used on such-and-such website.

You're right, internet stalking probably isn't a big deal, but once a lead set is on the public market, it can go ANYWHERE. Many companies that sell the data don't care who is buying the list, as long as they pay for it. People should worry about their name and contact info being in a csv file that takes 8 hours to load into a sql server. I would imagine that 99% of internet scams start with lists like this.

Well worded, however Rush would indeed call you a communist. Ever read Jude Waninski(sp)'s book "The Way the Works Works"? It seems that the guy also neglects a few pretty important economics ideas --> Informed consumers and informed voters.

  4. kmail and netscape mail (maybe thunderbird?) on Linux Desktop Email Key to Success · · Score: 1

I currently use Mandrake 10.2 for many of my office needs and will say that when I first started using my linux box as my primary office machine, I had some NASTY problems. Before I go into them, I should mention that I am going to migrate to the latest version of mandrivia when I have a few hours to be a geek instead of a business dork, but WHAT ABOUT EFAX?!?! I have to get wine to work to view efax files? Sure, I've done so, but, again, I had to take a couple of hours to be a geek --- what about all the business dorks out there who don't have time to be geeks? I agree strongly with this article. I get anywhere between 15 and 100 emails every day that require my attention. Being a Linux user for about 8 years, I had some problems I had never encountered --> I wanted to (from time to time) export emails from linux to an xp box and thus used Netscape mail. After about a month, my inbox got corrupted somehow and anytime I opened Netscape Mail, KDE would crash the xserver. The problem was fixable by recreating my profile, but I could never retreive some of those old emails; not even on my XP box. MAN was it all a huge pain in the ass. I now use KMail, and only use Linux for my office needs. I wish it had as many capabilities as the latest version of outlook.
