  1. Is anyone really surprised? on U.S. Wants Large Cyberpolicing Powers · · Score: 1

The U.S. gov't already thinks it has the right to run around patrolling the real world, why does it surprise anyone that they're pushing for the same all-encompassing bullying rights in the virtual world, too?

  2. Big Deal, Nortel is already leading the pack on Motorola Introduces Home Cable Modem/Router · · Score: 1

Nortel Networks has already been pushing this envelope with their 1 meg modem. Nice to see the rest of the market frantically trying to play catchup before Nortel finally blows them all away with fibre to your door. They're already the leading supplier of optical gigabit networks, and the ONLY company selling terabit networks. These modems are pretty piddly.

  3. Open your eyes! on What the Linux Community Needs to Grok · · Score: 2

Good lord! Read what you just wrote, buddy: "Who cares what software people want to run on Linux. Don't be so small-minded." What are you, an idiot??? Why SHOULDN'T you care what kind of software people want to run on an OS! That's what an OS is FOR! What do you do with Linux all day, just sit there and type 'ls' over and over, marvelling at how much more efficient Linux is at listing files than Windows NT? Good grief... talk about "small-minded."

  4. I know if *I* were a criminal ... on Encryption Debate at Mitnick Trial · · Score: 1

I'd sure encrypt my data too! You should always encrypt illegal things, it just makes sense, right guys? All smart criminals encrypt their data, and people who encrypt things obviously have something to hide.

  5. Do some research - Chernobyl is PERFECTLY Y2K safe on Chernobyl Reactor Restarted, Claimed Safe for Y2K · · Score: 1

Read my lips: There is absolutely zero, nada, nil chance that anything in Chernobyl will fail due to Y2K. How do I know? Because ALL of the equipment used in Chernobyl was manufactured pre-computer era. The hardware is too primitive to be affected by anything related to Y2K. Saw a documentary on it and they directly addressed the issue. So sleep tight, Ukranians. :) Y2K is literally the least of your Chernobyl worries.

  6. That's NOTHING. on 2.4 Gigabit Network Demoed · · Score: 1

Wait till you see what's down the road. 1.6 Terabit networks are already being built using cutting edge DWDM technology.

  7. Who cares! on RealPlayer Uploads Your ID Too · · Score: 1

Good grief people, it's just a number. Most software/freeware gathers far more info from you (or tries to anyway) when you download it from their site. And why shouldn't they? Hell, they invested the time and money to write it, and all they want in return is to know who's using it. The least you can do is answer honestly, or don't whine about the free software. Are you forgetting that the whole damn Linux movement is central to the concept of "free"?

Geez, people, they're GIVING it away. If you don't like what you get, write your own damn players. Don't bitch about something you get for free because it does something horribly invasive like sending a unique random number to some server every time you use it. Ooo! Scary! Get a life.

  8. Nintendo doesn't set the value of rares, folks on Nintendo Sued Over Pokemon Gambling Addiction · · Score: 2

This is almost exactly the same as the Magic: The Gathering game. Wizards of the Coast (makers of the game) doesn't set the value of the rare cards. From the manufacturer point of view, a Jester's Mask (valued at $20) is worth just as much as a common Goblin (10 cents). The company doesn't make an extra nickel off the Jester's mask, they sell every card for the same amount, not individually, but in packs. Nintendo does the same thing. They get n dollars for a pack of cards whether the pack contains all 5 cent cards or a 20 dollar rare. So the company isn't making any money off it, its all the kids and the market. You can't hold the company responsible because they don't make any extra off the rares. It's not gambling, its kids learning a life lesson.
