I don't mind internet ads. Take/. for example, I always here of assholes talking of blocking/.'d ads, let me tell you that is f'd up. CmdrTaco gives us this nice place to come and read and you block the ads that don't really take any extra time to load. The man is trying to provide us with education/entertainment, he deserves to be paid. Slashdot wouldn't be possible if it weren't for revenue from ads. TV wouldn't be possible if it weren't for revenue from ads. Magazines would be about 10 times more expensive if it weren't for revenue from ads. But if that is the way you people want it I say Andover charges a membership fee for Slashdot and Magazines from henceforth and for now on cost $45 a pop. Would that make you guys happy?
AOL is stuck in a deal with MS to use only IE. AOL is Netscape, I would think that once the contract is up AOL will use Netscape code, which should mean cross-platform support. BTW I am not defending AOL and lost all respect for them when I got a call from them asking me to rejoin, I HATE telemarketers and coming from a big company like AOL is just low, but I do like Time-Warner, and more specifically Ted Turner. It will be interesting to see Bill Gates reaction when he learns that his precious MSN is now in competition with the other Billionaire.
The multi-tap will allow four-eight players. So two control ports isn't really that limiting. I could have sworn the PSX was going to have a modem. The web browser wouldn't be to useful without it would it?
That is the most ass backward thing I have ever heard. If anything settop boxes are going to obsolete the PC. Think about it are you going to spend $300 to play kick ass games, surf the web, play DVD's, etc. Or are you going to pay $1000-$2000 dollars for a much bigger machine to do the exact same thing. The saving grace for set top boxes is going to be HDTV, for once console games can have graphics that are as crisp as PC games. And as far as I know I have never met anyone that prefers playing on a 17" monitor as opposed to a big tv. There just isn't room for more than one or two people in front of a computer desk. New games are usually at their most fun a 3 or 4 players. And screw this modem play crap, I want to be able to laugh in a friends face when I frag his ass. Palm and Palm-like devices are already cutting into the PC market because they provide some of the essentials that people use computers for. Boxes like the Playstation are only going to increase that hole in the market, why else do you think MS is so anxious to get into the console market? The first PSX already has things like floppy drives and mice available. If you were to just add a keyboard and a printer the PC was just obsoleted for one-third the price and twice the performance.
This article was posted on Slashdot because Sony is a technology company. People who use computers (ie. Slashdot readers) usually play video games, which Sony PS2 does. People who use computers (ie. Slashdot readers) are usually also into things like DVD and HDTV, which Sony does. If you think Slashdot only posts about Linux then you obviously haven't been reading it very long. Most of (well at least half of) the articles aren't about Linux. Maybe you should follow the old usenet rule and lurk abit more before you post, heh?
I was just wandering if the old Apple computer schematics that you gave away at the homebrew club are available anywhere. I realize maybe Apple still has rights to them or whatever, but I don't see where they would mind people seeing them now as they are so old. I would be interested because I have been fascinated by computer hardware and feel an earlier model would probably be a better place to look and start learning about this stuff. If the schematics are not available anywhere do you know any place one could look to learn about this without paying thousands of dollars for school? ( I don't really want to make a career out of it, just play around with it abit)
Geez arent' there any limits to who can IPO? I have been scouring the Yahoo! Venture Capital section for anyone who would provide seed level funding for a Linux Game company but no one wants to invest in video games. It seems all the VC firms are hung up on this "internet" thing. Maybe I should just incorporate now and file an IPO to get the money, silly me, I thought I would have to have a product first. Of course I guess I could just turn it into a scam of some sort so Slashdot would run the story and the VC firms would come to me. I wouldn't mind be called a scam so much if I could get the money I need. I've already had one person suggest I was trying to cash in on Linux's success. I would have thought anyone who had used Linux for a few years or so would know that anyone wanting to start a game company to produce Linux games isn't trying to cash in on anything except for maybe their own desire to actually play a computer game again. Besides if I was cashing in on Linux I wouldn't plan on supporting FreeBSD and BeOS. Oh well I am rambling again. Sorry:) My rather long winded point is that the SEC really should set some stricter rules on who can go for an IPO. Of course I guess there should be more common sense involved as well. I mean who in their right mind would ask for money from the general public with no track record? The general public isn't like a big firm, I know lots of people that want to invest in companies but don't really have the money to spare. It isn't at all fair that the average shmuck who doesn't know jack about the Linux community except that every Linux IPO goes gold might waste his life savings on this.
I'd have to say this thing looks pretty neat, but It wouldn't do very much good for me. I have a really messy house and my method of vacuuming is to just pick up stuff that gets in the way then plop it back down on the floor. I don't think this little "bot" will do that for me:) I didn't read everypage of the website because the thing is kinda slow loading, being slashdotted and all, but what about vacuuming under couches and tables and stuff? It seems to me this is limited to wide open relatively uncluttered spaces, besides am I the only one that things us humans need to quit finding ways to sit on our kiesters all day and let machines do the work for us? I mean vacuuming isn't that bad. Unless you have a really big house, but that why you have an upstairs maid and a downstairs maid:) Someone else mentioned (the first post actually, imagine that a useful first post) that this was just a rip off of the robotic lawn mower, now there is a good idea, we have 10 acres of land that can be a real pain to mow, by the time you are done it is time to start over again, it would be nice to just have a continous running bot. Of course them cityfied people with a half an acre don't really need it, but considering I've seen some of them with riding lawnmowers they would probably get it anyhow:) Nothing wrong with that I don't guess, it's still outside and hot or cold or whatever, not like vacuum cleaning in a climate controlled house. Oh well, I guess soon we will have devices that breath for us. *sigh*
I guess you've got a point there about Samba. It just seems like alot of hassle to me to keep the battle going. It's great that MS wants to team up to make a standard but they should pick a partner that WANTS to be their partner. Imagine if something horrible were to happen and only one man and 5 women were left living. MS is the man. AOL, ICQ, Yahoo!, and AT+T are the women. MS goes up to AOL and says "Hey Baby! We got to repopulate the earth so let's like... do it and stuff" Then AOL says "NO!" MS should leave AOL alone and go fornicate with one of the other women. Why does AOL have to have sex with MS if they don't want to. When all the other women do and the whole world is populated by little AT+T's and MS's and Yahoo!'s and ICQ's then those families will live on, but once AOL dies she has left no lineage. I know AOL (the company not the girl. hehe) isn't going to die anytime soon, but it would surely be outnumbered (maybe not now, but some day) if it refuses to accept the standard.
True, but then again if the Yahoo! AT+T and MS userbase powers were combined (they would form Captaaiiinn Planet! hehe sorry that phrase reminded me of that old tv show.) But seriously if AT+T MS and Yahoo! and ICQ I have been leaving them out. were to combine their userbase the AOL wouldn't be the biggest userbase. 18 million AOL users could still use another IM if they wanted I am sure, unless AOL blocked that but that would be Anti-Trust and they would be on the hotseat with the DOJ. Besides since when has MS ever backed down to competition? I think this is the first time they haven't tried to destroy something with thier own products since the 90's began. And I think this is the one time that they need to do just that.
Security, by definition, can't be bypassed. So your saying that because the US Navy Seals or a group of Elite Uber-Ninjas could get past the gate of a POW Camp that said camp is not secure? Security is defined by Websters as the condition of feeling safe It doesn't say the justified condition of feeling safe. Security is a relative term, every system on the face of the planet could probably be cracked, does that mean that we can't say Linux is secure, or FreeBSD, HP? I think though that maybe I used the term security out of it's traditional computer context, I mean that AOL tryed to block MS intentionally and MS should have respected that. After all you don't see them rushing to support Linux, they try to squash it. That's what they need to do here, create a new standard that combines AT+T, MS, and Yahoo! and whoever else wants to jump on board and squash AOL
There is no doubt that there needs to be standard, MS is right about that, but why does it have to be AOL's standard? IMHO AOL has every right to keep others from using thier protocol if they want and Microsoft shouldn't have kept bypassing the security features, that was just wrong, they wouldn't like it if we bypassed their security features. Am I taking AOL's side here? No. I think that if AOL wants to keep the their protocol non-standardized then Yahoo!, MS, and AT+T need to get together and make a standard protocol. Soon people will drop AOL's IM because they can communicate with more people through the new standardized system and AOL will suffer for its wrongdoings. MS nor AT+T is accomplishing nothing by keeping this war going on, except maybe for once MS is in the role of the good guy and they don't want to lose that:)
Yeah, not only do they consider the pen mightier than the sword but they consider the sword mightier than the gun. I can get arrested for walking down the street with a big ass sword in plain view but it is perfectly legal for me to carry a concealed pistol. Kinda ironic huh?
You know what? I am really beginning to see where the f1r5t p05t3rs are coming from. The moderation system is meant to keep people in line and contribute positively to the subject, but when a second post is marked redundant and a score of 1 is marked overated as has happened to my post you really begin to lose all respect for this thing called Karma. Mark me -5 if you want to I don't give a damn from now on I'm gonna say what the hell I want when the hell I want until the moderation system here improves. This past week I have been wrongly moderated a to a lose of over 10 karma, that is ridiculous I never intentially troll or insult anyone......until now.
I don't really understand the article, it said that Sun would have to abdicate their copyrights. Is that right or am I reading it wrong? You can't hardly blame sun for wanting to keep the copyrights to their work. Like the article said, there is a de facto standard, do we really need an official governing body maintaining the standards. Take Mesa for example, it has not passed any OpenGL standards and aside from not being able to call itself OpenGL it works fine as a replacement to OpenGL. The problem lies when companies like Microsoft begin to "enhance" the platform, but Sun already sued MS's arses for that so not to many people are likely to try it again.
Oh. Well that kinda puts a kink in things:) 'course I reckon people have a right to copy protect their images, but I don't think all copiers should do it. Sometimes I think todays modern governments would have just shot Patrick Henry when he said "Give me liberty or give me death":)
You bring up an interesting point, what would this do to the paid copying industry. Any documents would be tracable to kinkos, not the copier. Come to think of it what if you sell your copier?
Watermarked scanners wouldn't be that bad really, just crop the watermark out. After all it IS scanning it into an image editing program and if the watermark took up the whole image than the photo would be useless. Just crop out the bottom or side or wherever it is and be done with it. As far as copiers go, it would be interesting to watch the black market of "bootleg copiers" sprout up of copiers that have been built without or have had the watermarkings removed.
You know that is another thing to consider about this, that man better get a HELL of alot of money because I don't think anyone will give him credit for a long long time. This just proves he is incapable of handling the responsiblity. (hmmm, isn't there some "we're not responsible for your purchases" clause in a credit card contract?). It's like those people that fake a back injury and sue for workmans comp. They get about $50,000 which sounds like alot but is really only enough to live on for four or five years, then nobody wants to hire them and they end up broke and working at MickeyD's BTW: Sorry for the double post guys
Gees your right, I should have known that. My father has an old moving van he uses for storage of his valuable tools. He was going to lock the doors, put a padded chainlock around them, put high voltage signs everywhere and put a small (as in non-lethal but still a good kick in the pants) voltage to the tool box. He asked a state trooper if this would be legal and the cop said that anyone who got shocked could sue us. Ain't that some shit. Dude done trespessed, ignored a high voltage sign, busted through two locks and tried to steal something he wasn't supposed to be touching and he could sue us? There is something really screwy with the american "justice" system
What is the legal status of online gambling? If it is legal then the credit card companies have every right to extend a merchant account to these companies and the guy has no case. If it is illegal then the guy was breaking the law when he gambled online and has no case again. I really don't see how he can win, does anybody know the outcome of the case where the women sued the credit card companies a while back for the same thing?
