All kidding aside, if a WiFi college started handing out preconfigured laptops, think of all the folding / genome decoding / other collective computing that could be done while all the sorority girls are busy IM'ing each other in class...

Read on Wikipedia: CowboyNeal is the online nickname ("handle") on Slashdot and other websites of Slashdot editor Jon Pater. His handle was inspired by a Grateful Dead tribute to Neal Cassady in their song, That's It for The Other One, the lyrics of which run: Skippin' through the lily fields I came across an empty space, It trembled and exploded, left a bus stop in its place. The bus came by and I got on, that's when it all began, There was Cowboy Neal behind the wheel of a bus to never never land.

He is best known as the target of the usual comic option on Slashdot's poll.^H^H^H^H^H^H for his promise to serve only two terms as a Slashdot Editor ^H^H^H^H^H^H for his boyish good looks and many acts of selfless kindness to hungry children throughout the world.

The things that impressed me most about the article were the apparent commitment to excellence that Steve Jobs has; His hands-on, detail-oriented, perfectionistic level of involvement; and the demi-god status he appears to receive from his employees. That's why he's so successful, IMHO.

Boy am I happy to be an American, but let's take a step back. We have certain rights and freedoms here in the USA, and we're proud of it. But we're a sovereign state and China is a different sovereign state. Should we be trying to impose our standards on another country? What if China pushed their agenda on us? YES, China's policies may be bad for the common Chinese person, but are we really encouraging those policies by doing business in China and abiding by Chinese law while doing so? Or are we helping to change the bad policies? All I'm saying is you can't be a missionary to a foreign country without GOING there.

  5. Free Market Kicks Ass on Microsoft Censors Chinese Blogger · · Score: 1

I agree that the laws in China are bad, and that we rightly consider China to be behind the times in certain areas like wages, quality of life, and pesky "human rights". But I'm glad that Microsoft, Apple, Google and others are doing business there, because that's what will change the opinions and policies of the Chinese people and government. The more China is included in the global economy, the more it will be encouraged and required to conform to global standards. Think of glasnost and perestroika in the USSR, the Berlin wall, and others. You think China hasn't noticed the success of capitalism in Hong Kong and Taiwan? It might be changing slowly, but it is changing. In the meantime, I do think that Microsoft and others should follow China's laws, even if they are bad. As said before, it is the cost of doing business there. Also, before you condemn those companies for doing so, bear in mind that when they sell products to China they are helping to reduce the trade deficit and are bringing money back here to the USA.

Online news sites are in a rush to get the news out as quick as possible, if not "before the other guys do," so there will naturally be more initial mistakes. Other influencing factors could be... The lack of a big budget, lack of staff, lack of years of reputation to uphold, the fact that papers are harder to correct once printed.

  8. How I Learned to Stop Whining and Love Evolution on Federal Judge Rules Against Intelligent Design · · Score: 2, Insightful

The big question we think this debate is about is "Is there a God, or isn't there?" I think many Christians think that evolution is anti-God, when it's not. It wouldn't be the first time large numbers of Christians didn't accept new scientific ideas. Think about Copernicus, Galileo, and others. They turned out to be right, and it wasn't the end of Christianity, though by and large it condemned their theories and behaved rather badly about it.
You can't use science to prove God exists, but you can't disprove it with science either. The universe could have been created to look and behave like it does, or it could have ended up this way all on it's own. Scientists has tried for all of history to either prove or disprove God, and no one has been able to do either. It will always come down to a personal choice of belief: Either God is damned smart or we are damned lucky.
I do think that in many if not most ways "ID" as a movement is more about fighting a perceived hidden agenda in the theory of evolution rather than true science. True science is about finding fact, regardless of what that fact might imply. Christians of all people should know that God is a big boy, He can take care of Himself. Christians should focus on following Christ and spreading the gospel, and not on picking worldly battles.
I like evolution. Personally, I think God would have designed creation as a riddle no man could solve, where His followers would have to live by faith, and not by science. I happen to like that God is smarter than us, and I think that when we die and we find out He really DID create everything, we'll be all the more amazed at what He's done (though some of us might feel pretty stupid for not seeing Him in it). If we die and He's not around, I guess none of us will feel anything at all.
