The reason why VHS has won from BetaMAX was simply because of one thing: pr0n! The pr0n industry embraced the VHS technology because the tapes were fairly cheap. Because lots of pr0n was available on VHS, people bought a VHS recorder!
Simple network effects at play here: do NOT underestimate the power of pr0n, really!
It is funny to see that people want their mail agent to become a multi-functional application that has sharing capabilities like calendars, todo's, whatever.
However, the name for those applications isn't a mail programma! Instead we like to call them groupware.
M$ Exchange is a groupware application, so is OpenMail. I'm not using either on of them, instead I choose to install MoreGroupWare to provide all those features to me. But, Sylpheed, on the other hand, is just a (handy) mail agent/news reader.
That's not entirely true, as Solar Designer and Duc Song stated with their article about SSH traffic analysis.
They state that a man in the middle attack does work, even for SSH2.
"Your range isn't much better than line-of-sight on any band where you can get serious bandwidth. On the HF bands which do allow DX regularly, IIRC you are limited to very low speeds; it used to be 65 WPM Baudot (!), but it may be as high (yeah, high) as 4800 BPS now. You just don't have the bandwidth to play with when your entire band is only 300 KHz wide; you have to play nice and share, or else you aren't operating for long."
Well, that's not completely true! The Bavarian Packet-Radio Group develops HIGH speed modems (19k2..76k8) especially for packet radio! (BTW: Most of the current packet networks are high speed (>19k2) already!)
The REAL problems using packet radio is:
Where to leave the freakin' antenna! To get at least a realiable connection, your antenna should have at least have free sight!
Besides that, you should have a license, something that could be solved by allowing NON-licence transmissions at special frequencies...

Alas, my 0.02 Eurocents...

But, alas, that's my $0.02
