  1. Re:Anti-skip features? on 80 hour/4.6Gb Portable MP3 Player · · Score: 1

So I guess every HD already has anti-skipping technology built in? I mean, I can imagine the arm being nudged over during a write operation... that'd be pretty icky. I'm just wondering why they mention this as a "cool feature" when it seems to me that most hard drives already have this capability built in. Granted, there are gonna be hard drives that are more resilient, but why do they mention it like they invented it or something?

Just martketing; just something prospective (and current - when they ship) owners can roll off their tongue to their gawking friends. :)

So why is it that CD's are so much more jitter sensitive than HD's? Feeding a CD player 50 G would probably kill it for good. A lot more loose components, I suppose.

    Cheers!

  2. Anti-skip features? on 80 hour/4.6Gb Portable MP3 Player · · Score: 2

This kinda puzzles me.. if your hard drive were to skip, I'd think you'd have other things to worry about than your music not being continuous, although the drive mechanism would probably find it's way back to the right cylinder. Most hard drives are rated for something like shocks of over 50 G (decelleration of 50 G), which is quite a lot. Not something you create while jogging, I'd think. However, dropping it would probably be a bad idea.

Any one know more about what they mean with "Anti-skip features"?

    Cheers!

  3. Re:Junkbuster is the way to go on Cookies, Ad Banners, and Privacy · · Score: 1

Yeah, but don't all your cookies then get refused (in Netscape), including the ones for Slashdot and Amazon, which are so very useful?

It's nice that this article tells us that it's happening... I had no idea... but how do we disable cookies being attached to gifs, then?

I think I'll be taking a look at Junkbuster now. :-)

    Cheers!

  4. Shouldn't be computer illiterate, though on Uncle Robin's Advice for Lovelorn Geeks · · Score: 2

    I applaud this article, however,
There is a danger in having a girlfriend who knows next to nothing about computers: they don't understand why you need to spend so much time behind the monitor. They feel a little alienated and somehow as if the computer deserves more attention than them. The author says that you should look for a woman that is willing to accept that you spend these long periods of time, but I can tell you that those are far and few in between.

Also, if they don't know/care, it can be difficult for them to understand your world. And who ever said that other coders (your girlfriend in this case) are your competitors. I don't consider my other geek friends my competitors... Of course, it's true that she'd be likely to be busy with her own things, and there'd be even less time toghether.

Still, I agree with a lot of things in this article. Looks aren't everything, and I'd rather have someone who I could have an intelligent conversation with than some girl that is only beautiful.

    Cheers!

  5. Dissapointment on Handspring Having Troubles Delivering Visors · · Score: 1

When the Visor was first mentioned here, I went straight to their site and began configuring an Visor that I'd like. But, things moved like molasses... I decide to try again later. I come back a couple days later, and the cool configuration process is gone, with only an option to leave behind an email address. It's too bad, but, I'm not deterred yet. I'm hoping I'll be able to order one from Amazon or so. Gotta have one!

  6. Pointless on Why You Are Not On Any Forbes Lists of Rich People · · Score: 0

This article was fairly dumb. I was hoping for something a little more stimulating. He mentions only one thing whch has any elevance: rich people need to get rich off of someone. Duh!! The rest was cheesy and a waste of time.

  7. Not too many lyrics on Ask Slashdot: What Music do you Code By? · · Score: 1

Mostly electronic music, otherwise I get distracted. Think Goa trance, techno, drum-n-base. Keeps me focused. It's great!
