I worked for some time on retinal analysis, but it was for medical purposes and not recognition. The retina scan is very coherent, the quality of the picture doesn't really matter..
But to do a retinal scan, the eye needs to be immobilized a couple of seconds in front of the scanner.. so it ain't very practical on a large scale screening plan.. but for identification, retinal scan is more accurate than fingerprints..
Aside from the technological hassle/benefit hosted application have a BIG economical advantage. It eliminates all distribution costs. Ideally this would lead to more money put in development and eventually getting better applications.
