Seriously, though, I believe that Microsoft could become a serious player in some of the technologies mentioned by Katz. For example, imagine if MS decided that Linux was the key to winning the enterprise market. I believe they would be the number one vendor of Linux software within a year. Microsoft Linux. Microsoft Office for Linux. Microsoft Visual Studio for Linux. The Microsoft Linux Developer Network. The list would go on and on. They have the money and the manpower to do it. All that is lacking is the will.
Is this far-fetched? Damn straight. It would require a 180 degree shift in Microsoft's world view. The thing is, they've done it before. Remember the Browser Wars? Microsoft went from being ignorant of the Internet to being a top player in less than two years. I believe they could do it again.
Basically, my point is that Katz is writing off Microsoft too quickly. Any company with that much cash and that much manpower can move mountains if it wants to. All that's missing is the will.
