you're presuming that man is the dominant life form. Evidently, we're not even in 2nd place. When you realize that by weight, we're outgunned by over 10:1 by termites, especially considering that little tiny creatures have far higher metobolic rates / mass than large creatures, even man's supposedly polluting technologies get lost in the noise. Too many people have this group ego problem and they escalate themselves to importance they do not deserve. I guess self esteem is rather worthless when there's not much to have esteem about.

It's far worse than that. Seems like we were just getting out of a mini ice age back then - There were some other real curiosities going on too. After the advent of the telescope, people started doing sunspot counts and I think it was 1750 to 1800 where there were none - fortunately ham radio didn't exist back then because that sure would have devastated the hobby for a generation with the 11 yr sun spot cycle on the fritz for a whole generation. Although 'global warming' is full of pseudo science - caused by gov. meddling in the process in order to create scares to gain more power, I am coming to believe that we are undergoing a bit of warming - not based upon the pseudo science. After all, either it's getting colder, staying the same or getting warmer. While the extensive data on the earth doesn't seem speciically point to only one of these alternatives it does appear that Mars, Saturn and Jupiter may be undergoing a bit of global warming. I guess for the 'man-made' part put forth by the scare mongers, there is now a real quandry. If true, then those two robotic electric go carts on Mars must be responsible for the global warming on Mars. So much for solar powered electric vehicles being environmentally friendly. Oops! As fer jupiter an' saturn - they've been undergoing massive storm problems - there is now a Red Junior that may or may not merge with Jupiter's red spot in the next few weeks. Red Junior is about the size of earth - man what a hurricane. Well, I guess we're lucky those whackos in the 70s who claimed we were headed for another ice age didn't get their plans invoked - to drop coal dust on the ice sheets. Assuming such was possible to have implemented - and that it would actually work - we'd be in a real pickle. It looks like this sun spot cycle is going to be a real doozy - biggest and nastiest since the 50s, and the next is gonna be a wimp, hardly worth having. Down here it looks like we're gonna be in for a mega drought if that prediction holds true as it seems that except for cold fronts and hurricanes, our rainfall depends upon cloud formation - which seems to be tied to cosmic ray influx which appears to be coupled to the sun's magnetic field activities - which is associated with the sunspot cycle. Unfortunately, not much is know about this because the political hacks pushing global warming tend to suck up research funds and institute active suppression of that which does not support their viewpoints. A great example of politicized science (most likely pseudo science) crowding out real science.

welcome to the real world. perhaps rather than cabal and conspiracies, one might look more at the social structure of any high school clique and their attempts to force conformity in their groups to get that bit of understanding of human nature that pervades all of society. conformity in science carries more than the threat of shunning those not conforming to the group. it can destroy careers of virtually any but perhaps the most noted. For example Halton Arp - an expert on quasars and odd galaxies. He survives at Max Planck Institute after a stellar career but is virtually no longer taken seriously, even by most amateur astronomers. If you're not a world renown hotshot and especially if you're just starting out, you do not speak out. An excellent presentation on politicized science like global warming can be found in a non fiction appendix in Michael Chriten's book "State of Fear", a good fiction read with a refreshingly different viewpoint. Science is the pursuit of knowledge and it is fraught with more screw-ups than successes. Engineering is the application of scientific knowledge. It's curious that after 2000 yrs, there are many stone bridges still in use in Europe that were built by the romans. Ever see the Tacoma Narrows bridge film of one of the more recent bridge building attempts or any of those controlled explosion tv shows of them having to trash a 40 year old bridge because it's a hazard already? politicized science is a travesty. it's purpose is not learning but political action, normally to push leftist socialist agendas which is even a bigger travesty, one not even supported by economic science.

I think I'm witnessing the culmination of form over substance, the battle of self esteem vs. understanding seems to be over with self esteem the winner and science the loser. The real question that should be asked is do cfcs have a measurable effect on the ozone hole. since the hole was discovered during IGY, the international geophysical year - 1957 and cfcs were barely in their infancy. For those of you with high self esteem who are concerned over man's great damage to the environment, I'm sorry to report that you and I and the rest of us aren't even number 2 when it comes to environmental importance on this planet, much less number 1. Those titles belong to much smaller critters where biological impacts are involved. That doesn't mean to say one shouldn't clean up their messes or preserve scarce resources. What it does mean is that many of you have negative knowledge because much of what you know is falacious and it extends across the board from science to religion. One of the best descriptions of this is done by author Michael Chriten in an appendix to his novel "State of Fear" where he discusses the dangers and falacies of polticized science. Another little tidbit about the ozone hole -- It varies with the 11 yr sunspot cycle. Right now, we're at the absolute minimum of that cycle and will probably remain so for much of this year. Note that predictions are for this next 11 yr cycle that it is going to be seriously strong with lots of sunspots and perhaps coronal mass ejections too. This will mean that the purveyors of the politicized pseudo science of ozone holes will be crying about how much worse things have gotten, probably starting in about 4 to 5 years. They will also complain that the efforts and protocols are not enough to save the planet. There are other factors involved. For instance there is an active volcano down there spewing gases up from just upwind of the area of the hole. Then again, the ocean is chock full of na - cl ions (salt)and there is a lot of evaporation going on which puts cl into the air. It makes for a nice energizing saltwater smell too. Of course with politicized science, real cause and effect and the search for scientific truth must be suborned to the political goal driving it and funding it. There is great financial profit, mostly from governments for those who support it. There is usually punishment for those in science who don't. Sometimes, as in the case of the ozone hole there is private support - like from the megacorporate cfc patent holder about the time the patent ran out. But then who would research and report such a thing other than the Cato Institute. For those of you who cannot distinguish between global warming and the ozone hole pseudo disasters, I understand the Chinese are looking for organ donors for their new medical export industry. For those of you who think electric cars are the answer to much of the global warming problem, I've got some bad news. Although Mars appears to be somewhat smaller and more fragile than Earth, it seems that global warming effects are now being observed. And this is after only two pint sized electric buggys started running around there. Obviously, they're having a far worse effect than would whole fleets of SUVs. And Jupter is even worse. We drop 1 frickin probe down on a chute and now it's going global warming on us too. I'm beginning to wonder if we really don't actually need millions of illiterate illegal aliens coming into this country - not only to actually get some work done, but more importantly to raise the literacy and IQ levels.
