When it's done once (RedHat), it's OK. The second time is already a trend, and this trend is something I don't like. Because Linux is not about the money, and these people change that. There is someone sitting there, saying "OK, this guy did this and this, he gets 300 shares. That guy did that and that, he gets 100 shares."
All animals are equal, but some are more equal than the others?
Also, now you will be getting people enhancing Linux not because it's cool, but because it's generously rewarded by every IPO-going company. Many open source projects will get abandoned. Resentment will grow...

Heh, even though I moved to the US, I still consider Friday to be the fifth day of the week (back in Russia words Tuesday and Friday literally mean "the second day" and "the fifth day") - so you won't ruin the fun for me!!!

I've never experienced a "potato" enlightenment, but I know for a fact that beer stimulates your brain. I once, having nothing better to do (was on a train), took four IQ tests from some stupid book with approximately two-hour intervals, and had a bottle of beer approximately 30 minutes before the second one. While my results on the first, third, and fourth tests were approximately the same, the second one was 15 points higher (no, not 100, 115, 100, 100:) Of course, might've been just a coinsidence, but I'm a convinced beer follower ever since.
So... the perfect food before college exams is beer and potato chips. Cool!

What totally pisses me off about all these laws is that being a 20-year old and PAYING TAXES to this wonderful country (and, by the way, more taxes than 3/4 of the population), I still can not buy myself a bottle of Heineken!! It's plain ridiculous - if they think I am old and responsible enough to support poor single mothers and to pay the politicians' salaries through my taxes, then at least I should be allowed to do what these poor mothers and politicians are allowed to do!!!

A couple of pieces of advice, based on my experience with raising VC money (we're still in the process, so if anyone's interested in investing - let me know):
1. Don't go there in a very early stage, at least not until you find yourself some management/marketing/business development people, or at least SOME people.
2. Along with VCs and angels consider various incubators (although they take A LOT)
3. Try to put together a coherent business plan and and/or an executive summary - what the estimated market size it, potential price of the device, potential marketing strategies, competitive advantages, risks, exit strategies, and so on.
4. Be able to answer the question "OK, suppose we give you $X million. What EXACTLY are you going to do with it?"
5. In general, most VC firms have webpages with short FAQs - take a look at those.
Good luck!

I don't like most MicroSoft's products. I also do admit that they have an extremely large market share in OSs and abused their power. I might even agree that Bill Gates is an evil genius. However, (!)none(!) of the above gives anyone a right to regulate or break up the company - they did not create it, so they should not touch it!!! After all, the US government is the largest monopoly of all! Let's break it up. -- The word "woman" is not politically correct any longer.
Just a quick comment about Ellison being a millionaire. I am not saying that Oracle products are necessarily bad, but their databases are comparable to SyBase and Informix, their applications are not better than SAP's and Siebel's, and their OLAP engine was actually ACQUIRED a couple of years ago together with a company (I don't know what it was called, maybe Express, just like the Oracle's OLAP engine).
The reason why Oracle is so successful is their amazing marketing talent and great salespeople. After all, Ellison himself used to be a salesman, and that's the way he runs the company. Once again, I'm not trashing their soft, I'm just saying that marketing is WAY more important. Just look at Borland (Inprise, whatever) -- The word "woman" is not politically correct any longer.
College kids are not idiots, believe me! I mean, of course, some of them are, but a vast majority will prefer a slightly cheaper black Dell to a neon-orange IBM. On the other hand, maybe 5% will be ready to spend several hundred bucks more - well, good for IBM... -- The word "woman" is not politically correct any longer.
It depends on your size. If you are a small company and sell brand-less widgets, zShops under Amazon are perfect for you (well, in 90% of the cases).
However, once you reach a reasonably large size and begin to care about you own name, this won't be enough anymore. Suppose Panasonic wants to set up a new online store - would they be better off putting it under Amazon, or spending some ridiculously low (compared to their volume) amount of money and getting their own system with their brand on it? -- The word "woman" is not politically correct any longer.
E-barter is a great idea, and I would love to have that and have even been thinking in that direction for some time. Unfortunately, it is impossible on a reasonably large scale, for a very simple reason - once this becomes big and coordinated and many people do that, the government (don't we all love it?) will realize that no taxes is being paid, and will therefore prohibit this stuff. I would be happy to write you a patch in 2-3 hours and get a cool gadget in return, but The Government will lose something like $50 in taxes if we do that, and they will NEVER let that happen. -- The word "woman" is not politically correct any longer.
I guess the company had to donate that $10K to stop all those green morons who don't understand the coolness of bringing penguins to the SJ convention center and begin to terrorize the great company for no apparent reason. Hey, man, that's the whole point - I totally love my job AND make plenty of money, just like most of the geeks I know; it's not OR, we don't need to choose. Yeah, you're right - they work at McDonald's, make 10% of what you and I make, and don't even think about the possibility of retiring at 25. But every night they go home, spend all their money on pizza instead of saving it for a bigger house or a faster Ferrari, and copulate, while we geeks sit here and post messages on/.
