Well.. IRC has mostly replaced local BBS's here (Norway). But it just isn't the same. There's so much more "junk" on an IRC-channel than in BBS-conferences or chat.
According to my (little) knowledge about IQ-tests, they were written especially with "number-intelligence" in mind (ie. spot the pattern-type of tests). This would rank anyone that is bad at maths as a "vegetable". Unfair? - Yes!
Well, a lot of people (ie. geeks) do find it easier to "speak" through the computer. It's not that we miss something... it all comes down to experience, I think.
What do we do most? Chat on IRC etc., or do we talk to other people?
I think it has much to do with that there is a part of verbal, face-to-face converstation that some geeks/autists/aspergers doesn't understand.
Face to face-communication is complicated. There are more factors at play than just the things people say to each others. Their facial expression, the tone of voice, their eyes, and their general "body language" - there are a lot of factors.
This is also why many geeks - including myself - feel so much more comfortable while "talking" on IRC or on a BBS. It is so much simpler, and we know we aren't giving out "the wrong signals".
If ther are any coders interested in this I already have the GUI designed (Not in code, in design) so I can show you/tell you how to do it. It's insanely simple to make a perfect GUI, it's the code under it that needs work...
I'm not a coder, so I can't help you there..
Anyway, I have been dreaming about making a 3D-like GUI. It could take ideas from the conventional WIMP-like design (Windows, Icons, Mouse and Pointer), but be done in 3D. Ie. it should be possible to zoom around on the desktop (not change resolutions) etc.
Of course, the best thing would be to make a new user-interface.
I agree with you. Attempting to make a program easier to use, might make it harder.
One of the largest complaints about Windows from DOS-users was the lack of control over the system. They considered it too "user-friendly".
Many "newbies" (ie. people that have bought computers during the last four years or so) are also frustrated about Windows, but they hate command-line operating-systems even more.
Come on, why won't we fix the problem? The fundamental problem with computers in general (for beginners) is that they are hard to use. They aren't like coffee-machines or game-consoles. Newbies don't know how to fix things when things doesn't work. A lot of them is more interested in getting their work/gaming done, and then proceed to do other, non-computer related activities. So why don't the developers make it easier for them? Windows, Linux, AmigaOS, BeOS etc. is certainly not the answer to all one's problems. Just one of my rantings...
Interesting. Still, imagine that in the future, people go on vacation to earth? Maybe people are living in a weightless enviroment, and exercise 8 hours a day, while working and living their lives. How do you think that being on Earth would feel? Heavy? Possibly. Unusual? Certainly. People would have the same problems (ie. how to make love, how to move around).
How did you get OS/2 3.0 (Warp?) to use the NIC instead of PPP and dial-up? Is there a webpage out there with this kind of information?

Sega's Genesis-console was in fact quite succesful, in all over the world.
Especially since the Linux-versions of the programs you have mentioned runs slower than the Windows-versions.
Not a good point, if you are doing a Linux vs. Windows-discussion. And definitely not a good thing for people that are new to Linux.
This reminds me of something..

Not that I'm a nerd or anything ... :-)

Maybe we should make a middle-line?
