I'm afraid you are horribly ignorant as to the conditions of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea for the vast majority of the Cold War. The FACT is (and you can research this to confirm) that North Korea outproduced South Korea for the majority of that period in time, it was not until the late late 80s that things began to break down - just as the now corrupted USSR.
DPRK living standards, heavy industry, production, etc outpaced and shamed the South Koreans and it was not until recently that South Korea out did the North.
