The page proclaims that they have proxies, but the programs are just modified versions of the standard qwcl and qwsv that come with quakeworld, in other words built from the q1 source code with some extra modules.
This is what happens when you have as many PR + webpage people as programmers.
They should look at setting up a system like autorpm (which is for registered version Redhat) at the University to make updates for things like security problems. They could put all the files locally to avoid a huge amount of downloads from redhat when the updates come out.
Only potential problem with this is if someone breaks into the machine with the update archive--instant r00t on all the boxes.
Keep in mind that a Cray can push through massive calculations in a situation non-suitable to parallel processing (i.e. very large linear system solutions) which a beowulf of any type is unsuited for.

While the potential for viruses to do damage is diminished when not run as root, there are still local root exploits that potential viruses could use.
In addition, a trojan need not necessarily be a virus installed by root. For example, a system like the script kidd3z Tribal Flood network could install as a regular user and use a non privledged port. Of course it would not be able to conceal itself from "ps" or "netstat" or hide in some daemon. But there are a lot of novice users out there with RedHat 6.0 on their cable modem doing ip masq. They may not notice for a long time, and they are especially the targets that a trojan might want.
The most corrupt state in the USA? The one where all the spamming MLM pyramid-marketting comes out of (probably the only one where they're legal)? THEY want to get all high and mighty about internet access now?
Because of the way the legal system generally works, can the decision on linking be used as precedence in other cases in California in the future? Any lawyers here?
Well I'd think that after so many years at the helm, BillG would get sick of it. If I had been him, I would have taken the money & run a long time ago.
Okay, so he's still responsible for overseeing Software Development...so I guess this means pretty much business as usual anyways--he just doesn't want to be hassled with all the paperwork, lawyers, etc. that a CEO has to see.
Actually it was the competing registars (i.e. competing with Network Solutions). Given them a f---- break. It's not like Network solutions hasn't had it's share of screw ups, even with years of experience behind them.
There's a few people with [GP] in their nicks that hang around the channel where the QL people and Slade did....

most likely Gamesnet #console

Well it looks like the source is out now, intentional or not.

The QWForever project has a similar model, except it isn't violating the GPL.

I think I submitted my first request under the GPL for source code to the quakelives project in mid January...

The Quakelives guys hang out in #console on gamesnet a lot...
irc.gamesnet.net (for a random server)
west.gamesnet.net
il.gamesnet.net
...

If the link doesn't work (planetquake tends to puke under load), here's a few others:
& file=qwcl-win32/
3dshack finger server
bluesnews finger server
You could always just finger johnc@idsoftware.com, but I really don't recommend it.... I don't think the id server can take the load.
The offending page is here: http://w ww.quakelives.com/main/ql.cgi?section=dlagreement

I think Nicolas is referring to the need to be root to make spoofed packets in linux, or TCP half-open stuff, etc.

Seems to be doing about 150 hits/minute or so right now.
/. had linked it, they wouldn't need to sell shirts anymore... ;)
If they'd put up banner ads. before

After all, everyone knows that Edison invented the light bulb, electricity, etc...
Actually he didn't even invent the light bulb. He just improved it.

The last time you downloaded an open-source program, did you read ALL the code? Even the boring stuff? Hmm?
Is it just my connection, or did we /. the NSA web site?
I used the whois available here: http://freshmeat.net/appind ex/1999/10/30/941297803.html plus a perl script to take care of the recent rs.internic.net changes (not necessary for this query).

They are related, but Caldera & Microsoft settled the lawsuit. Caldera system is different.
