  1. The idea itself definitely sounds familiar... on Network-Monitoring Data Put to Music · · Score: 1

It would make a much better story though if suddenly the same trained people start recognizing what's wrong with this whole world simply by listening to most popular chart hits :) Seriously though, while the approach itself sounds like fun, it will never prove itself more useful than the textual data we all rely on as there will be no easy way for you to quickly find the necessary piece of information in the audio stream... Fast forward, anyone?! ;) I don't think so :) It's still much easier to Ctrl+F things...

  2. Re:Good Move! on VMware to Make Server Product Free (as in beer) · · Score: 2, Insightful

I haven't compared them 1 to 1, but I would expect that GSX has higher requirements for your server, both memory and CPU wise. If that is not the case, you're absolutely right - GSX is all I'm going to need. One more positive side is that open sourcing GSX may trigger few separate public projects based on it (depends on what license GSX sources will be provided under).

  3. Good Move! on VMware to Make Server Product Free (as in beer) · · Score: 1

At last they started to realise that it's the support services and not the actual cost of a product which helps you grow. Now if they could only give VMWare Workstation for free, they would be able to successfully compete with the catching up competitors, especially the already open-sourced ones like Wine or Xen.

  4. I sure hope... on RIAA Sues Woman Who Has Never Used a Computer · · Score: 1

... that RIAA tactics are not taken on by other industries - cause otherwise we might end up being blamed and sued for illegally downloading and sharing music without using computers, speeding without driving a car, illegally migrating without crossing a border and doing oh-so-many things you can be blamed for without ever going anywhere near them.

  5. Can someone tell me one thing... on The New Boom · · Score: 1

Is is a boom around the Google bubble, or is it a bubble around the Google boom?

  6. Re:What stops Google from doing this? on Google to Compete with iTunes? · · Score: 1

My point exactly! And with the momentum Google has gained over the past 5 years, I has wads of cash and huge audience, both almost automatically generated through google.com search analysis and optimization

  7. What stops Google from doing this? on Google to Compete with iTunes? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think the huge advantage Google has over most competitors is a spare cash. After all, it wouldn't cost them so much to subsidise most of the price of each song to RIAA or any other proper authority, and then offer users a song at any price which will be attractive. And with iTunes's 0.99$ a song, you don't have to knock off this much - every little helps, so even 0.50$ will seem pretty good :)
