VMware has two totally free products: VMware Server (the next-generation version of GSX Server, now in beta) and VMware Player (which has been released for a while now). Those two products should have all the features the average user needs to create and run VMs.
A Virtual Appliance is just like a regular "appliance", except it's in a virtual machine instead of in a physical machine. Kind of like if you took a regular computing appliance and did a P2V on it.
