Props to the badge, and thanks for speaking up about this idiocy. We all support a well-trained and disciplined LEO, and more of you should step up to reclaim your professionalism from thugs like these. NYPD witnesses testifying for the prosecution during the Abner Louima trial (mop handle sodomy, remember?) was ground breaking. Now finish the job; stand up and push aside the armed amateurs in your midst - we'll emerge a better, safer society.
Seriously, or (evacuated) pipe dream? Determine a specific application that'll make money for investors or answer a public policy need, and a grant (DoE, DoD, etc.) will follow. I'm well versed in business plans, case presentations, and navigating management hurdles. Email me sometime if you'd like to discuss. Good luck!

He was a damn good programmer when I last worked with him (2000-2001). The Bitter Java books established his creds as a saavy technology writer following years in software development. People who find careers beyond programming -- hiring developers, writing books, etc. -- aren't inadequate or obsoleted by default. But they are honest in admitting that their current gig isn't about coding.
(Just my.02, can't speak to your conference experience)
