Yum USB, 64-megs RAM, 8 megs flash.
Now if only their WiFi driver is OPEN SOURCE and working reliably in all modes. This is my complaint with most Broadcom and Atheros-based products right now, the WiFi driver blobs are a PITA.
It doesn't matter how fast it is, if it isn't correct!
We as IT professionals should focus more on CORRECTNESS of
the terabyes of data we store not how many IO/s as long as it does
the job we need. Ensuring correctness should be job #1.
Right now in production for me safe means ZFS. When Linux delivers
a comparable stable tested filesystem I'll be all over it. Right now it
still seems like the 1980's where 99% of people are obsessed over how
FAST they can make things. I cringe every time I watch an admin
start "tuning" a filesystem to make it faster by flipping off sync and
other safety features.
So the GOOG gives a wink-wink to network intrusion:
".....And if you're on an unreliable or slow connection (like when you're "borrowing" your neighbor's wireless),....."
A Cyrus mail-store can handle this with aplomb. Single instance store means only one copy of the message body need be store per backend, and all recipients are linked to that copy.
That "$500K to upgrade Cyrus quotas to 1G" is total HORSE-POOP!
There's only one reason anyone would quote that figure. They are in bed with the Google guys, and had to come up with an outrageous justification to push the switch. Kickbacks?
You got sold out to an ADVERTISING COMPANY and this is a victory?
There are LOTS of issues here.
If you are just keeping a campus directory of off-campus addresses fine. However if you try to "school brand" it....
1) On-campus authentication support
2) On-campus helpdesk support
3) On-campus portal
4) ITARS issues
5) Backups?
6) Tracking of email problems inside the blackbox?
etc..
About all you "gain" is the backend-mailstore is somewhere else. The backend mailstore is by far the smallest cost and complexity of any email system when you really examine it. And for this, you trade your students to a private company they will probably remain with once they get used to it. The ethical implications of this are enormous, you are literally selling your students eyeballs to an ADVERTISING COMPANY for a little bit of savings on mail storage. Anyone who can't see the ethical blind-spot that most PUBLIC SERVICE administrators have here..... they SHOULD.
Let me make a simple analogy. If a bank came to your school and said we will do $50K worth of free accounting or other services for you, and in EXCHANGE all you have to do is require all students have a checking acount with us..... What would you say? This is a total sellout and most people don't get it.
How about releasing all their software in some open-source form? Oh right all revolutionary thinking stops when it might cut into the jet fuel budget for Google. Never mind.
This is absolutely like the episode of Dilbert where they have to fix the Y2K bug in the company system, and Wally is the only one who can do it.
You guys think of payroll as being EASY. It isn't. I've seen teams of accountants scramble & scramble every month to get those paychecks out on time. Nobody loves you when you are right, but they HANG YOU OUT TO DRY when the numbers don't balance at the end of the day.
Oh yeah, let's just randomly change a bunch of paychecks, and later we'll figure out how to fix it & provide back-pay etc. This is the zone where class-action lawsuits are filed and accountant certifications are revoked.
Payroll for multiple agencies in a state as big as California is a farkin nightmare. You think it's easy, send your resume to Arnold and see if he'll hire you to fix it.
In essence, work cheap, can't travel (9/11), can't switch jobs.... Exactly my point. My WIFE came here through H1B but even she says it's idiotic. She jumped through all kinds of hoops trying to satisfy her employer to get a Green Card and they always kept the carrot further out than she could reach. When I married her the issue became moot, otherwise she would have been booted out of the country by now when her employer discarded her. Now that she is free of tyranny of H1B employer she got a good job in California.
The H1B program is all about government-facilitated enrichment of businesses through indentured servitude. That is what it is, and all the bleating from the corporations about what a service they are doing by combing the world for the best talent is just BS. They want obedient disposable servants not citizens.
H1B has turned into a huge scam for corporate slavery. Employers know they can get cheap labor and throw them away when done. Most visas go to giant corporations like MicroSoft. If we want to "welcome the tired and huddle masses" then re-open Ellis Island and take them in and give them Green Cards or Citizenship papers and let them walk into a free country and decide what to do. This equine excrement that ties them to the sponsoring employer should be viewed for what it is which is a disposable cheap worker program.
Yeah I've been hearing SSD would replace spinning disks for a long time now. Still hasn't happened. Even early this year SanDisk was touting it's next products which I still do not see on NewEgg. When they've actually shipped a FAST 32-gig for under $100 get back to me.
You only have to look back a COUPLE OF DAYS in Google stories to see how they handed over the IP of a blogger without even waiting to get sued over it. Is y'alls memory that short? I don't have to look very much further back to find examples in China. Oh yeah, they are so PRINCIPLED and Do No Evil is the first thing on the list? That's gold paint on the turd. Google are ad-men and hucksters who happen to be flying so high they can afford to pretend to have principles, instead of being so patently obvious about it as Madison Avenue. Please ignore their transgressions because HEY FREE 5-GIG MAILBOX WOOHOO!
No different from any Madison Avenue hucksters trying to sell you junk you don't need.
The fact that that have a gazillion dollars gives them giant egos and lets them imagine they are different. They have very good PR right now and the stock is flying high. Please ignore the fact that they will hand you and your data over to anyone who asks, and sell your soul for a buck-fifty. Wait until their stock tanks when everyone finally catches on that only the ADVERTISING makes any money and all these other ventures are money-losers, and then they will get desperate and look like the tools they actually are.
For ANY programming jobs, the end objective these days is not good programming.
It's turning out servicable CRAP as quickly and cheaply as possible.
Programmers constantly under pressure to spend 80+ hours in front of a screen, and constant hints from management about outsourcing their jobs anyway, well where's the motivation to keep your intellect in programming?
This is why smart people are turning to other fields, and there will be a shortage of US programmers whether you are MicroSoft or anyone else.
Militaries and generals are always very well geared up to fight the LAST WAR!
All those veteran soldiers of Gulf War I had seen a well-fought desert war between regular army units, and learned how to do it better. Problem is they had no idea how to fight in what came after that, a war of occupation.
Yeah, let's pay to SELL OUT our students!
What a brilliant idea.
If some BANK came to your school, and said hey we'll help out a bit with your accounting department functions if you will just make sure all your students use our BANK, you'd look at them like they were insane.
However when it comes to selling out students to be captive CONSUMERS of a big evil email vendor, people see few problems.
Can't you see the business of MS and Google is NOT EMAIL? Are people blind & stupid?
They are in the business of capturing your online existence, as a TOOL to sell you stuff you don't need. To imprison and describe you in every conceivable way and use you. To own your eyeballs and mind.
I see it as entirely disingenuous to describe it as "free", the linkages required with Google go deep and they require ongoing work to maintain an authentication & authorization infrastructure that is compatible. The COSTS are NOT zero as often described.
Let me make it SIMPLE for the simpletons and ethically challenged.
Your neighbor has an old-style cordless phone. You find a handset for that type phone at a garage sale, and start using THEIR phone line that THEY paid for, to make your own calls.
It starts out just doing it in the middle of the night, you know so nobody will notice. Then one day they pick up the line while you're on it. Do you LAUGH HYSTERICALLY and explain to them how you are entitled to use their utility?
Probably not. Because you know it's wrong, and illegal, so you hang up really quick. All other analogies people will make, are attempts to RATIONALIZE what they are doing and make it okay when they know it is not. There is a vast difference between picking up radio signals like with a scanner, and ACTIVELY sending them into someone else's network so you can make us of the utility that they paid for and you didn't.
I'd like to see some interviews of regular users of this service and real numbers.
Instead all I see is marketing fluff and PR. TFA you referenced sounds like contingency planning. Just signing agreements on how things would proceed if it ever goes anywhere.
I see.
I'm supposed to convince YOU that someone ELSE'S hand-waving business case actually makes sense.
No thanks.
If there were a crying need for wireless data, the cellular companies would already be seeing tower overload for existing data services. The fact that they aren't should tell you something.
MORE! FASTER! BETTER! would be driving WiMAX forward.
But it isn't happening.
The bulk of phones being sold now, and plans in use, do not include data.
Yum USB, 64-megs RAM, 8 megs flash. Now if only their WiFi driver is OPEN SOURCE and working reliably in all modes. This is my complaint with most Broadcom and Atheros-based products right now, the WiFi driver blobs are a PITA.

XP has become increasingly tedious to INSTALL due to the raft of patches needed afterwards. No hope for a re-spin call it SP3 it seems.
And how is this different than MBA grads who watched "Secret of My Sucess" one too many times?
Yeah, producing CLEAN antique LONG-LIVE code.
Not craptacular Java junk, that lives on quicksand.
