I believe an interesting real-world parallel for the sword would be software licensing, with Microsoft being the goblins. You only license the software, even though you pay for it, Microsoft still actually owns it, and doesn't want you to sell it to somebody else...
Another parallel would be the Ministry of Magic being controlled by the forces of evil - would that be Rupert Murdoch and his cronies controlling the media? I'm probably delusional and seeing conspiracies where none exist, but...
