Maybe Google is just reading what the analysts are saying and then moving in another direction... This is Google's way of revealing how little analysts actually know about anything... Of course, this could also be my bias against analysts coming to the surface... I'm tired of hearing how company XYZ's stock price was driven up (or down) by analyst A's comments... (Let the "correlation not causation" debate begin!)

In math I think they call it: necessary but not sufficient...

I think the problem here (no not with /.) is the media (and the correlation of increased grant money that goes with the big media splash--although I don't think I've seen that study yet)... Studies like this suggest (to me) areas that should be further researched to determine if there really is a link... Part of making the link is identifying a mechanism...

If TV watching causes autism, tell me how...

Actually, antilock brakes don't quite work just like old-fashioned brakes... In my experience, the initial reaction to the "pulsating pedal" when the antilock kicks in is to let up on the brakes (which generally limits the stopping power of the brakes)... Maybe this is more like people's general impression of Microsoft, since they make you think it works just like the old version, but there are some hidden "features"...

Look at the "all data" plots... For each of the 3 "markets" listed earlier, one could pretty much cut out the bubble from the late 90s and it would appear that we're back on the growth trend that started back in the 70s (or where ever you want to draw the line)...

  5. Re:A Disease for Stupid People...? on Alzheimer's Progresses Faster in Educated People · · Score: 1

Thinking about your "incubation" analogy, the more educated people may just be time-shifted from those less educated... In other words, say everyone follows a similar path that gets steeper (faster descent) as you go... If your symptoms take longer to show up, you would appear on a steeper part of the curve and seem to be getting worse faster... However, this may be an artifact of the timing... Theoretically speaking, if we used the time of initial onset of the disease (rather than the time of diagnosis) as the basis, we might find that there is no difference between these groups of people...
