    Model Ms are the best. If you're using Windows, there are free keymapping programs out there. When I used XP, I mapped the Win key to my right alt, which I never used.

    As a writer, I love Gnome because I never notice it while I'm working. It's like the platen and whatsis bar on a typewriter -- I tune it out. I want to work, not look at phosphorescent blue crap.

    Scanners that can track trunked digital systems are freely available in the US -- Uniden makes several. But once the digital signal is encrypted, it's illegal to decode it. The FBI and Secret Service use encrypted digital systems.

    Actually, police-band radios have always been legal in the US (not in the UK, though). But with the rise of digital encrypted radio systems, those days may be fading fast, as it's a federal crime to even try to decrypt the transmissions.

    I'm astounded that Florida would have a law making it illegal to count paper ballot after votes have been electronically tallied. Exactly. Why are certain people fighting so hard to avoid adding this capability? They could charge outrageous prices for the refitting.

    It's not fair use -- they're using the entire paper, not an excerpt, and use of the entire paper is the core of their business. As for motive, it doesn't matter. Nor does anyone's opinion of the merit of the papers. What the company is doing is a clear violation of the students' copyrights. If a private school made surrender of copyright a condition of attendance, that would work. A public school couldn't do that, however.

    God knows I'd never suggest using Outlook, and Evolution really isn't ready for prime time, but I use Thunderbird (and Eudora before that) because I want my mail on my machine, not on the web. I have mailing lists dating back to 1994 I use for research, and if my net connection goes down (as it does out here in the boonies), I can still search my archives.

    I'm amazed anyone would even have the gaul to propose this kind of thing, let alone try to actually pass it. Ever been to Ohio? The son of one of our most obnoxious "evangelists" was recently popped for kiddie porn and pronounced "saved" by his dad (in a special letter the local papers printed verbatim) the very same day. Slam dunk in the court of public opinion, kid lost his job as a youth coach but will never do a day in the slammer. Jesus is the only lawyer who does you any good around here, but his influence is amazing. Google "Daubenmire" for the story.

    as a US citizen, I'd hate to be similarly judged by the Bush gang's crypto-fascist theocratic dementia. 99% of Iranians want to go to work, school, the mall, etc. ... just to lead their lives. And Bush has methodically subverted the Iranian reformers since 2000, all the better to have a demon to bluster against.

    If a hotel hires room-cleaning staff without checking their records and references, the hotel is responsible for the loss of what they steal. Myspace had a duty to monitor the ads on their site, and this is hardly an obscure exploit.
