If you run ancient clipper-applications w/o source -and thus no way to migrate them in 1 or 2 mouseclicks- which use DBX-databases-ervers as the company I work for use, you'd better stick to Netware, connecting to databases using IPX/SPX is soooo much faster than windows.

Now we have moved to an AD (yuck) things slowed down dramatically, and there is no way to improve it, because MS fsked up the protocol...

Rumours go ppl@redmond did that on purpose when the Netware/Windows war _really_ was going on (ages ago) to show their clients how fsked up that protocol was and they'd better use MS TCP/IP and stuff.
    But remember, it's just a rumour ;)

    But be careful !
I am a coder long enough now to know good programming is a form of modern art and thus should be appreciated accordingly.

But... If they just hand over the money, I see some problems on the horizon.
I mean, as long if it is OSS most people just code for fun and fame, but if money gets involved people get greedy (don't we all?) + every Billy-Joe-Bob would become an 'OSS-developer' all of a sudden.

Instead they'd better sponsor resources such as PC's, servers, hosting, free fat pipes for developers etc. and monitor that.

  8. Well... on The Pandemic vs. the IT Department · · Score: 1

Our system-administrator is already a sick bastard (never there, always 'sick') so it won't affect our network, because it is already a big mess with event-logs full of errors.

Having said that (what a relief), I think that all 'important' IT-people (no, not the managers) but the real GOOD BOFH's (but not my mentioned colleague) should get a shot of H5N1-antibody first.

I wouldn't want electricity or other important primary stuff such as ATM's to fail, just because the sysadmins responsible are crowing around with birdflu.

  9. You could make money out of this in the future on Next DVD Format War Still Wide Open · · Score: 2, Interesting

Buy a pile of PC's having DVD-RW drives on board of all flavors with all kind of OS-flavors, buy DVD-RW stand-alone drives of all flavors and keep them in good shape, ie. don't use them, keep them packed.

Why ? Because there will be a day people cannot play that particular DVD-format because it has become obsolete. And if the content is very valuable (eg. family pics, movies, data) people will be willing to pay large sums of green to you if you are able convert it.
